This week on Wednesday I participated in my 2nd Hourly Comics Day. I was at work all day, so things turned out pretty shabby. I might do some more work on the rendering later. It was a really trying week at work. Luckily I had a few things to look forward to: the Superbowl, Shutterbug Follies, and S!# 9 arriving in the mail. BTW I still have yet to install my graphics card.

I watched the Golgo 13 live action movie starring Sonny Chiba. It was awesomely bad, but it made me realize that I am Golgo 13. At least when Sonny Chiba plays him. I was compelled to also download the Golgo 13 tv series, the movie Queen Bee, and The Global Frequency comic and tv pilot. I watched the pilot and read the first issue. Not bad. Also I read more of Allstar Superman, which is probably the best Superman series I've ever read.

I don't know how it is that I'm just learning about Jemma Salume.

I missed the Puppy Bowl, but my favorite team won the Superbowl, and I fell asleep slightly drunk. I have been worrying to no end about my vehicle situation. I took a long walk today to look at new cars, and ponder what I'm going to do. Along the way I ventured out into the ideaosphere again where I can travel to any place I like to live, and can carve out the life I really want to lead. And then it got dark so I came home and ate some awful pizza. On the plus side I came up with a great idea called Sandwich Porn, some funny pick-up lines to put on shirts maybe? and sketched Brian Fukushima's Hungry Cereal Mascot. Yay! I feel like I'm winning some ground here. OH yeah, I also talked briefly with Finch who encouraged me to go buy a lemon tree. I can't wait!

MAN?

So I've been thinking about taking a new direction with my blogging habits. SAN started out over 3 years ago as a way for me to get my noggin back into creative gear, and I think I've been pretty successful at that. I always meant to grow into something other at some point, and I'm seriously considering a separate, art-based blog. It might update on Mondays (MAN?)

I would love to actually get a comic rolling, but I'm still a little nervous about announcing an update schedule and not being able to cut it. I have to face it, I need to go through some remedial storytelling classes before I can actually even think of beginning a story. At the same time maybe I need to hone my fiction writing skills.

Monster Pulse by Magnolia Pearl Porter is a little like Pokemon, a little like Orphan Annie, and a little like Avatar: The Last Airbender. Maybe a little like A Distant Soil too.

I just bought š! #9 after learning that it won an award at Angoulême this weekend. I thank Lewis Trondheim that I am even aware of Angoulême International Comics Festival .

This seems like a great place to start reading: Jessica McLeod.

I almost forgot I bought Shutterbug Follies this past week. It should get here some time this week. The state of the union address was given this week. Also I got a haircut. I also tried to watch the Golden Globes. And then I heard Mike Holmes did this interview on Where Monster's Dwell, which I learned is the longest running comics radio broadcast. I watched an episode of Alcatraz by accident. Also some guy conjectured about Ice Cube's good day.

I started reading Friends with Boys again. And then I got sidetracked investigating a reference to Demonology 101.

So other than a few productive things I did on Saturday, this is how my weekend feels.

I became aware of The Firelight Isle by Paul Duffield of Freak Angels fame, because of some inquiries into the work of his partner Kate Brown.

Sadly this weekend Jazz legend Etta James passed away. The New York Giants won the NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers in overtime to advance to the Superbowl, and earlier in the week the vote on SOPA was delayed after a sudden increase in senate disapproval of the bill and a massive website black out.

I was working the early morning shift and feeling like a zombie. I think Portlandia was the highlight of my week. I also read a few chapters of Allstar Superman, which is great! I want to dip into Agents of Atlas pretty soon. Gene Hackman got hit by a truck while riding his bike, so I decided to get Unforgiven and The French Connection. One day I'll watch them along with the new Sherlock series. Guh, so many cool thing I wanna does!

This is pretty good news. So I spent this weekend watching football, sleeping, and doing laundry. The Giants took down the top seeded Packers, and all was well in my tiny little universe. I hung out with a good friend and some new acquaintances. The weekend still got away from me, though. I'm hoping to take care of some major things this weekend, and get some art time in over the next weekend. I can't let January slip past me.

Everybody's been talking about TCAF, and I really want to go this year. I'm also looking forward to hourly comics day next month. This year's begun on a good note, so I just want to use all that positive momentum to make some substantial changes to my situation. I need to get more completed projects up this year. I need to travel out of town at least 3 times this year. I need to push myself physically, mentally, and spiritually and broaden my endurance for the coming years. I need growth.

I need a better sense of time this year. I need to use my time more meaningfully, and have a better way of prioritizing tasks, goals, and long seeded dreams.

Here I am at the beginning of the new year waiting for a new life to begin. I've gotten little glimpses of something, had a few nightmares about things I've all but left behind me, and felt the tinglings of new relationships beginning, but the big bang eludes me. I am at this point desperate for some substantial, positive change in my life. I have been too long weighed down by circumstance, poverty, and isolation. I took a walk today, and it was sadly the most unfettered I've felt in months. I can't continue living like a prisoner in a place that doesn't acknowledge my existence. I need to breathe.

This was the week I dl'ed Umbrellas of Cherbourg, the X-men anime, and DNA^2. I started a new blog comprised of letters to my mother, became infatuated with Kapetan Sarah, watched the first episode of the new Thundercats, and then also dl'ed The Spirit, North, and Fist of the Northstar.

In the news Herman Cain dropped out of the Republican nominational race, and the SOPA hearings began. I was more enthralled by season three of Adventure Time. I got drunk and had barbecue at a friend's so I neglected to post. Sorry.

My Body is Ready

So something weird happened at work. My bosses decided to set me up to take over some guy's position and then fire him. I'll be working an early shift, which is cool. I just don't know about everything else. The poor guy has kids. That's really shitty. He's a decent guy, problems like anybody else, just pissed off the wrong person or people.

Did I also mention I tried to install my new RAM and realized not only are there only two slots on my board, but these dimms are not supported. So then my processor reverted to stock clockspeed and I have to figure out how to overclock it again--if that's what I really want to do.

Here's my quick art spotlight:

I got a chance to watch Conan the Barbarian (1982), Black Swan, and part of Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus. I've seen Conan before in my childhood, but it was an enjoyable rewatch to kind of update impressions I've been carrying around for 29 odd years. I also did Arnie impressions all the while. Black Swan knocked me off my feet. The movement throughout that film, and the combination of sound and cg are something to be lauded. This film gave me an experience of ballet that I've never encountered, and an experience of story that I seldom do. I want to get some sketches into this post if that doesn't take too long. Fur is a similarly invigorating experience. I love the color, and look of this film. I love the textures, the vantage points, the rhythm, and focus of this film. Hoping this week to get some sweet drawing/painting/inking time in, and maybe catch up on Misfits, NCIS, Psych, etc. Also good comics.

OH man go and follow Botjira, because everything she does is awesome! I found her art while parsing through the tumblr illustration feed, and had to google image search her work to find out who she was. I really wish people were more conscientious about crediting people's work on the internet. We are all initially anonymous, but it is through our talents and opinions we craft a presence and identity, and reposting uncredited work flies in the face of that.

Dustin Harbin tweeted about the work of Chuck Groenink, and it is good. While you're at Society6 check out Budi Satria Kwan.And for some reason I hadn't yet discovered Faith Erin Hicks' Superhero Girl.

A good list of graphic novels with strong design sense. *bonus condescension toward Manga. Roger Ebert got excited about Tintin and posted this. This article by NPR about the changing look of Superman inspired me to take interest in Curt Swan, Kurt Schaffenberger, and Gary Frank. Ice Cream Log by Hope Larson is the only tumblr you need. This animated gif comic was clever.

I want to learn how to make wiggle-sterescopic photos. I know there's a science to the angles of vision, but I am finding it hard to do solely through experimentation. I've found a few really impressive images online and it's become a bit of an obsession for me.

I've begun reading Savage Sword of Conan, Cerebus, and the new X-Men series. They are all pretty entertaining. I hope to start listening to the Game of Thrones audiobooks soon. I need to get my mind on track with something, and a routine would be much appreciated. Hoping also to teach myself how to ink with some cheap brushes I bought. The year is drawing to a close and hear I am trying to cram a bunch of stuff into a tiny alottment of time.

I think I need to look into changing careers. Like seriously.

Well I didn't go blow the bank at the Black Friday sales this year. Not that anybody would expect me to. I did splurge on a $10 pair of earbuds ($5 as soon as my discount comes back to me as a refund) and 2 sticks of memory for $30. That's about as materialistic as I got this week. I was so down on myself, and in general, anxiety-stricken about going outside I camped out at home all weekend. It made for a neurotic weekend. I've been Roman Muradov's tweets. I guess he and I are on the same wavelength.

I watched Conan (2011), The Big Lebowski, Willard (2003), The True Story of Troy and an episode of Pete and Pete this past week. I read a few pages of Ross Campbell's Shadow Eyes, and listened to most of Episode 6 of Boy Howdy. I went and got Son of Rambow after looking into Hugo, and also recently acquired the works of Milo Manara, The Savage Sword of Conan, and G.I. Joe the Rise of Cobra.

I learned about a bunch of cool BBC2 tv shows from this Dean Trippe poster. Now I want to watch Luther, Sherlock, and Being Human, as well as catching up on Doctor Who and The Misfits.

I did these sketches while watching Conan; I just worked up the colored bit in Sai before posting this. Maybe I'll see this one through. I started doing some research based on the concept of "premature sense of accomplishment". I am trying to investigate the correlation with the premature sense of defeat, and the roles they play in motivation. I wonder sometimes why I can finish menial tasks with a strong sense of discipline, yet struggle to apply the same sense of perseverance to more important, more complex tasks. That will pretty much be on my mind this week.

Searching for the Thrill of It

I watched a lot of movies this past week: The Other Guys, Hall Pass, Planet Terror, and Super 8. I'm compelled to comment on Hall Pass, since it has various similarities to a movie I watched last week, Crazy, Stupid Love. They're both films about middle-class White married men yearning for and trying to relive their bachelorhood. In Crazy, Stupid Love Steve Carrell and Julianne Moore actually capture some great nuances of a married couple--yet ultimately the film becomes a kind of wish fulfillment story for the son, who has so little screen time and character development that the point of the movie seems flat. Hall Pass, on the other hand is nothing but a crude day dream of two married, paunchy White married guys. They get to act out their desires toward characterless women, provide comic relief as bungling everyday joes, but nevertheless redeem themselves in the heat of the moment. Their wives played by Christina Applegate and Jenna Fischer, play their half-assed counterparts; their development and screen time is cut down to the minimum to provide a sub-plot for the film's true protagonists: the frail White male egos.

If you detect a bit of venom in these reviews, it's because I've given these films a fair chance, and left with a sense of . . . . geez White people problems! I know, I know that's racist. Yet these films both succumb to shallow, White male self-absorption, moreso Hall Pass than Crazy, Stupid Love. Crazy, Stupid Love had it's heart in romance, and actually did a great job at capitalizing on it's strengths--but it's middle class platitudes kind of made the entire film into a Pollyanna story for married couples. Hall Pass blatantly takes us into the vile imaginings of these marmadukes of mediocrity, with the assumption that us guys will all relate. Worse yet, the crux of this story is spoon fed to us in a few asinine setups: Joy Behar playing fairy Godmother psychiatrist to Jenna Fischer and Christina Applegate, Owen Wilson explaining to Jenna Fischer the "hard-wiring" of male libido in the midst of an unconvincing couples fight; Jason Sudeikis' "impromptu" treatise on the sublimation of their dreams to their domineering wives;

These kind of social grooming flicks have been around forever, and it's not difficult to understand their formula: Introduce main character(s) in a flawed relationship; Propose a change of circumstance through some instigating event or character; Test protagonist's loyalty/love for one of the other characters; Have the protagonist recite some seemingly meaningless piece of information introduced earlier as a testament of their love/loyalty; Things return to a normal/slightly improved state regardless of what kind of havok was wrought in the middle of the movie

And then everybody walks out of the movie thinking, that was funny and sweet, and maybe we as a couple, or I as a single person can take away a lesson from this. But the truth is these films are full of platitudes that bear only the most minimal resemblance to reality. If you sleep with nine women while separated from your wife, she probably won't take you back. A 40-something paunchy, awkward married guy would not likely be of any interest to his beautiful, young baby sitter, nor the hard bodied, blonde, Australian girl he ogles at the coffee shop every day. What is terrible about wish fulfillment stories is that they are incessantly improbable, and they give the viewer so little chance to explore the characters and their situations. Add to that insipid, truisms disguised as wisdom gleaned from true experience and you have one of these cheesy date flicks. The sad thing is that I've always had a thing for a good romantic comedy or drama. So I guess it offends me twice as much when I see a bad execution.

So before I go I wanted to mention an idea I'm working on. I wanted to combine this "mystic-punk" concept I've had floating in the back of my mind with some research I'm doing on the morality, the pleasure principle, and will to power. I'm visualizing a futuristic setting that analyzes the new world culture and its monetary system, especially in relation to user/citizen control and repression. I'm spurred on by trying to make sense of my own social conditioning, and recalling youthful ideas of utopia, self-discipline, and compulsion/desire. I want to read Neuromancer to give myself some background on cyber-punk, but as is I've got a ton of things in my queue: Cerebus, the new season of Misfits, Pineapple Express, the Big Lebowski, complete works of Freud, Mishima, the Walking Dead, etc. On a good note I did finish Moral Disorder and Little Nothings vol. 3. Too bad I had to return Peanuts vol. 1 Oh well, guess I've got to plug away to get to the stuff I'm really interested in. See ya.

This past week we lost boxing legend Joe Frazier, quickly followed by rapper and overweight lover Heavy D. The world celebrated 11/11/2011 at 11:11 (twice) and Veterans Day. Then later Manny Pacquiao beat Juan Manuel Márquez for the third time. It was pretty rainy. I found time this weekend to watch The Last Man on Earth, Wild at Heart, and The Hangover 2. I'm still working on Crazy, Stupid Love, Drive, and Valhalla Rising which I put on hold for any number of reasons, or just plain fell asleep to. It's been a week full of long sleep. Also I took a long walk around my neighborhood the other night.

I ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶u̶p̶ ̶e̶a̶r̶l̶y̶ avoided sleep to get an early start this morning to help out at a marathon. It was awesome, overwhelming, and awful all in one neat package! Ran into some old acquaintances from highschool, had coffee, bacon burrito. It felt like I was at a con. Then I went home and fell into a coma.

My car crapped out on me earlier this morning too, and that made me late to the event. Nevertheless I pressed on and arrived to show my support, which is something of value to always do and remember in life.

So this past week went fast, and I got a chance to watch a lot of movies: Drag Me to Hell, Night of the Living Dead, 28 Days Later. I think I'm going to watch Drive later. Haven't had a chance to art all week. I feel dumb for that. I need a couple days off to get my mind right.

How I'm feeling right about now. Fall is here again, and that means car problems. My car took a dump on me twice this evening, and how I'm getting to work is still up in the air. Meanwhile I am so behind on everything. Le sigh.

This is amazing and inspiring because I really liked The Phantom Tollbooth as a kid. Cucumber quest is something I just learned about. There are currently 3 days left on Camilla d'Errico's kickstarter for Tanpopo. Thanks to toybreak for giving me the heads up!

I watched Hide and Seek (2005) this weekend because I had watched Lexxy paint this, which was inspired by this. I just discovered Mikenesses. :O

So this week didn' t turn out to be a very artistically productive one. I barely touched my tablet, but hopefully I'll get into my sketchbooks, and work something up this coming week. It really feels like October flew right out from under me, which is a shame because I think it's my power month. Here's a little progress on the painting from last week.

Hi there,

My name is Del, King of Siam, and blogger of the Sunday Afternoon Noodle. Fabulous secret powers were bestowed upon me the day I began taking Paint Tool Sai seriously and exclaimed, "I got the powaaaaah!"

This past week I began painting a lot in PT Sai. I've only fiddled with it a bit until now, despite getting dozens of glowing reviews by online artists I follow. I feel like things are starting to click for me artistically, and that I might just end up on a steady stream of productivity.

I'll be reading Orc Stain by James Stokoe pretty soon. Somebody linked me to Adam Atomic's Bomber Planet, a few months ago, but it wasn't until recently I became aware of his other work.

Following up on some of the conversations going on about DCU's recent "empowerment" of female characters, I stumbled upon this excellent article by Comics Alliance. I have got to meet Laura Hudson. She is my hero.

I wish I could read Italian. I might enjoy this comic by Roman Muradov even more. I love Ryan Mauskopf's art.

These are process pics of another painting I started. I have trouble setting up compositions with just lines, so I decided to block in values first, then fine tune shapes with lines. I laid flats before I took a break.

I'm learning a lot of things while experimenting with Sai, hopefully those will translate well going back to traditional mediums. I hope to break out my acrylic paint soon, as well as my ink nibs.

I think part of my motivation has been watching the last 2 or 3 of Lexxy Douglass' streams. I like everything about her style.

It's Halloween season again, and Emily Carrol's got another terrifying tale to tell.

I like JP Coovert's comics. Also Puppy Teeth looks interesting. I'm mostly interest in the work of Kevin Czapiewski and his brother Matt who does Eat That Toast. I also discovered Stuff No One Told Me.

Remember this sketch from last week? I decided in keeping with my New Year's Resolution, and having read an awesome google + thread begun by Dustin Harbin relating to publishing, perseverance, and self consciousness, to push myself through in completing this sketch. The first pic is a feeble attempt at inking digitally in GIMP. The second one is a scanned and cleaned up version of a pen & pocket brush ink.

Can you tell which one I felt more inspired by? If you guessed the second picture, you get to see this preview. While I was inking I began to think about what these characters appearances could say about their personalities and histories. I've been reading a lot of Dresden Codak's tumblr, including this latest Speculative DC Reboot on villians. The female character on the left really came to life for me. She's definitely a very masculine character who is unsure of how to act feminine, but outside of her duty, wants to experience courtship and romance. I'm a little wary of pandering to LGBT readers, but I think her character is truly compelling for me. The other two, are pretty prototypical master/student, stoic/goofball archtypes. I'm certain these characters should be on a quest of some kind, and I'm heavily leaning towards a tongue-in-cheek, possibly self-referential slant.

This weekend I watched Contagion, a bunch of The Wire, NCIS, and Battle Star Galactica. I was so caught up in work I forgot to watch Breaking Bad. That might, for once, be a good thing. This past week the world lost Steve Jobs. Bless you Steve Jobs for all that you were, and all you accomplished.

I started reading Finnegan Strappe this past week. I have to say a giant congratulations to Jordyn Bochon on getting The Terrible Death of Finnegan Strappe funded. Speaking of the French, I finally started watching Mesrine. This is, so far, the film I wanted Public Enemies to be. Sorry Michael Mann.

I also started watching The Wire. I have to stop right here to address an odd thing I realized. Remember this?

Now, mind you I had at that point never watched a second of The Wire, nor had any spoilers about the show. I literally started drawing, and the name McNalty came to me after the fact, as did this fairly common cop-show trope. But for these two things to coincide in my life in such a short span of time, well . . . this is creepy.

To the left is a sketch I started working up. I am so slow at completing things. I don't even know why I started sketching this. For once, I just wish I had a totally interesting and consuming idea that wouldn't stop nagging me until I've completed it in whole. I don't know if I've ever truly had one.

I sometimes entertain the idea of revisiting old story ideas from my grade school and high school years. It seemed like back then I always had fervor and fever for getting ideas out. Nowadays, I think I'm overly critical of anything that jumps into my head. Also there's all that education mucking up my brain, keeping me from just playing with ideas as I once did.

I've been reading Little Nothings and The Complete Peanuts Vol. 1. I'm also nearly done with Ultimate Power, and struggling through the first arc of 100 Bullets. I recently read some entries in a Mythology pocket-sized book I picked up a while ago. I read about the Mead of Inspiration, Loki and the Ragnarok, and Sigurd; also Vishnu, Brahma, Siva, Daksha, and Durga.

Oh yeah, also APE was this weekend and I didn't go because I'm broke and I suck.

I have to admit: I slept in this weekend, just as I slept in most of this week. It is now 11:04 PM, and we're on the eve of the last week of September. It has been fall for a few days now, and here I am eating ice cream so close to midnight. My laundry is tumbling ever drier, and the hum of my computer's case fans is continually grating on my nerves. I want nothing more than to walk to the other room and lay down and in the silence read one of the excellent books on my list of to-reads, but in the back of my mind I know there is an even larger queue of comics, videos, books, and music right here on the magic noisy box. And then there is constant feed of various social networking sites. Through the week I probably lose 20-30 hours catching up with all the feeds, and it is quite literally exhausting. So there is my productivity problem in a nutshell.

This is entirely appropriate.

My brain just doesn't do what it's supposed to do anymore. Sometimes I wonder if it ever did. I'd really like to be doing more with my time, but I keep getting into these weird trances. I'm stagnant. That's what it is. Also I'm always a hair away from being broke, which sucks. Dear October, please bring me some very amazing, awesome, splendid, good luck, and a renewed spirit to keep the momentum going. Please great spirit in the air, creator, noble sentient energy from beyond the heavens, lend a part of your power into my brain, and let me overcome these minor hurdles. I've been dl'ing the crap out of some old comics such as: Man-Thing and Daredevil. It was all precipitated by a random article I read about Steve Gerber. I think it also had to do with me reading the Marvel Max series Foolkiller. I remember when I was a kid Marvel used to put out these Marvel Universe guides, they would run through the alphabet of character names, and list their stats including first and last (if applicable) appearances. My brother and I had a few of these, including the guide to dead Marvel Universe characters. I was filled with wonderment at the morbidity of these guides, the fact that somebody had to devise a way for these characters to die, and then, yet again, somebody had to write something of an obituary for them. Usually there were a few panels displaying the character in action, as well as their particular death scene. Wow. There was something sinister and gruesome about these things, that has stayed with me til now, and reading these Marvel Max stories reminds me a lot of them.

I had this idea to start giving myself art assignments. I basically want to make a list of things I am really bad at, or struggle with, or avoid all together and coach myself into breaking the barriers I've built up all these years. For instance, the first proposed assignment is to draw environments, with no figures. I have to do a little research into landscape painters, and background designers for cell animation--basically anything that could be a good influence or reference. Then I have to figure out methods of developing these environments both on a technical and conceptual level. I think I want to start simple, and as the weeks go on revisit old assignments with added emphasis. For instance, maybe the first week will be all monochromatic, and the first revisit will be color, and the third emphasize texture, or light source. I know, what I am suggesting is basically a poor man's art school, and since I couldn't afford to go back to school, this will pretty much be my last ditch effort at actually beginning a career in art.

I read Midnight Nation and watched Snake Eyes this weekend. They were both about a guy saving a girl, and finding his soul amongst the chaos and corruption in his life. I wonder if that was a secret message the universe was sending me.

I also read this excellent newpaper comic primer that I found to be very informing, as well as nostalgic. It reminds me to bring up Stripped, an excellent documentary about news print comics and their future. It also makes me want to go out and buy like a billion collections of strips I love, or am very interested in reading. I read a little bit of Alley Oop, and a few samples of Gasoline Alley from the Walt and Skeezix collections. I really wish I could get The Complete Peanuts set into my personal library. Reading about all these great cartoonists and their life's work really gets my gears greased.

I feel like I'm on a vision quest right now, or that I'm somewhere lost in the middle of one I started many years ago. I keep thinking about where I'm leading myself, who I'll walk the rest of the road with, or what I'll give up to gain greater purpose. Everything I do, right now, everything I stick my nose into begs the question and I feel like time is ticking.

This weekend was officially about Hurricane Irene, the VMA's and the assassination of Al Qaeda's #2 in charge. But August 28 also marks the anniversary of MLK Jr.'s I Have a Dream speech in Washington D.C., the birthday of Jack Kirby, Jack Black, and Jason Priestly, the anniversary of Orestes' siege of Ravenna, which concluded with his execution at the hands of mercenaries he had drafted into the Roman army. So many things! Meanwhile I did a bunch of errands and baked chicken. I bought a magazine also.

If you haven't been paying attention, Rutabaga has begun down at Kafka's Koffee.

The Things You Wanted

This is the second silly little comic I've done about a silly figure of speech. Please to excuse.

So this weekend I watched a lot of Psych and read a little of Lady Chatterley's Lover and Little Nothings. I also started up Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston. I started to remember being in school and having reading assignments, and then I daydreamed I was a teacher and I felt all impassioned about trying out different things to get kids involved in their education. And I started to think about how this stuff actually prepares them for life, and what they could do with it. And somewhere I got lost on a tangent about things missing in my own journey into adulthood.

I can pick up faint scents of my youth, the chilled mornings, foggy wakefulness. The way my brain had a way of separating itself from mundane reality, and seeing something amazing in the color of a book spine, or the reflection of a thorn bush in an oily street puddle. And how in the daily social routines I found myself idealizing relationships, hoping for intimate breakthroughs explosions of romance or camaraderie.

So here's another Sunday falling away into the pink horizon. I'm staring at the fading light wondering about the end of my life, whenever that may be. I'm hoping there will be a lot more adventures, laughs, and quality time spent with loved ones. I'm hoping for sappy romantic moments, and feeling found in a woman's eyes and arms. I'm hoping for children curled up in my lap, dancing around me, or holding my hand to cross the street; they are my children, my children's children. I'm imagining a life so distant from where I am today, where struggling to arrive is something silly I did a long time ago, some patch of silver hair long since fallen out in the shower. In this future, everything is alright and the Sunday dusk is the loving embrace of my parents whom I've all but forgotten.

Strong Silent Type

Happy Sunday! I have officially posted 144 posts! That's 12 squared! That's got to be a milestone. Today I had some barbecue and beers with friends. On Saturday I had a long walk around town and channeled Heisenberg from Breaking Bad. I had a daydream about a drug lord movie that I could shoot here in town. It was about a guy who wanted to get out simply out of boredom. While all his foot soldiers were building lives and families with all the money they were making, all he ever got out of the drug trade was intensity, suspicion, the occasional puzzle, but now he was just bored of it all. I got a sense of Dexter while dreaming it up: the tireless professional coming to terms with ennui and loneliness. I got to thinking about business things, accumulating assets, etc. It was an empowering trance for me. I only wish that I could translate all that trance-like thought into a substantial solution for my money problems.

I am drawing X-Men like crazy. I also drew the Iron Fist.

This weekend I also walked around Borders. You can usually find me in there looking for a bargain or something interesting, or just trying to take in the atmosphere. However, this time all I could do was walk around as though crawling through the rubble of ground zero. I can't say that Borders has any special significance for me; it neither draws immense ire, nor tearful memories of good times past. It is just a place, one of thousands of bookstores, that will cease to be in the near future, and to me that is just pitiable.

So an idea hit me over the head just now, or rather a kind of vague reminder of things I'm interested. At the back of my mind are these gorgeous Ashley Wood paintings spot lighted by David Apatoff, also this wiki entry about Nippur. I'm interested in mysticism and the uncertain--more specifically how human beings approach these unfamiliar things. I'm conjuring the ancient world where one of the old, long forgotten Gods reigned over foggy minds. I'm thinking of imagery that doesn't play to the conscientious and often commercial need to be immediately recognizable. I'm thinking of classical drama, that tugged at the threads of proper custom and precedent, unraveling the stoic traditions of yore, even as it made hairs stand on end, skin flush, and eyes water.

I've become accustomed, as of late, to stories revolving around the post-modern, the irreverent, mostly comedies. I've read countless autobio comics, and discovered the rhythm and ebb and flow of these communities of storytellers. But now, on the verge of plying myself at this craft, I am drawn back to high drama, mystery, mysticism, that wonder tinged with an uneasy fear of stumbling upon something profoundly sinister, or else intensely ungraspable. I've got to get to work.

On Illustrated Stories

I recently discovered the work of Faith Erin Hicks. I really enjoy her use of color. I also became reacquainted with the work of Tony Cliff. I'm finding it's always an exciting time to be reading and discovering comics. Stories are a wonderful thing to invest oneself in. Even better to see forms, ideas, emotions attempted in so many varieties in such an unbelievably different way than the written word. The syntax of comics is an open form, unfettered by subject verb agreement, tense regularity, or antiquated guidelines of propriety. It breaks free of cultural restraints in the same way early films did. I see why my life repeatedly returns to illustrated stories.

This weekend I added quite a few oddities to my queue: Michael Crichton's directorial debut West World (1973), The entire run of Iron Fist (vol. 1-4), the entire run of Matt Wagner's Grendel and Conan, both the Barbarian (1982) and the Destroyer (1984). My mind is a labyrinth of curiosities.

I also spent quite a bit of time reorganizing files and folders across three hard drives. The next step is to actually mirror archive these separate volumes. I would hope I will have upgraded my motherboard and bought a better set of ram modules by then. So many projects, so little attention to devote to them. Le sigh.

Will Travel

This weekend I took a long road trip to Southern California, probably the first long distance trip I've taken by myself in about 3 years. Spurred on by reading Lewis Trondheim's Little Nothings, especially Prisoner's Syndrome, the seedling for this trip grew hungrily in my brain. I've been wanting to visit friends there for a good while, and it just seemed like the right time to get away, share myself with a world I am no longer intimately acquainted with anymore. But things have a way of meandering, I've learned over and over again.

Before I go into all that though, I figured it's best to allude to the origins of things. When I was an infant, my parents loaded up their kids into a station wagon and drove across the country. A lot like this cool Vintage Road Trip, but with kids and serious, real life consequences. As the years went on, my family made a lot of long distance road trips, and I carried on the tradition when I became of driving age, culminating with my own cross country trip a mere 4 years ago.

So travel, if not in my blood, is definitely fixed in my psyche. These days I can't even think clearly for any great length of time without pacing, or taking a long walk. It behooves me to also mention that I spent a lot of my youth walking. So there is definitely something hard-coded into my behavioral psychology that points to traveling, moving, struggling through a journey, which I did this past weekend.

Things started off exciting as is always expected. The open road, the sun, the wind in your hair. But soon the road was congested, the sun was unrelenting, and the wind, well, the air conditioning was just more preferable. I got into Riverside Friday night in time to meet my best friend's 9 month old, and have dinner with the proud Mom and Dad. It wasn't so much as us catching back up as it was getting back into our mutual rhythm and punctuating our conversations with details. I've known these people for years, I know their families, at one point I was a lot like an adopted family member. Now I am more like a lost family member. The night was good, sleep pleasant, and the morning sweet. From there I left for San Diego, my original destination.

I couldn't really say the overcast was ominous, but it sure did amplify my uncertainty with being here virtually unannounced. I had breakfast and texted some friends. Went back and forth for a while with a good friend, before communication ceased . . . for nearly 12 hours!

I did fill up my downtime with my own accustomed exploration, finally seeing the Mission Bay Drive strip up from Pacific Beach to Bird Rock all the way up to downtown La Jolla and Torrey Pines. I made my way to Balboa Park/San Diego Zoo, Harbor Drive, Hotel Circle, Vacation Island, Crown Point, and Point Loma. It's exciting to be able to pass easily between so many neighborhoods with such different atmospheres. However, being strapped to a seat, with suitcases, bags, and personals shifting around, constantly at the mercy of stop lights, traffic, and the inability to properly stretch out, becomes an exercise in fortitude.

Needless to say, the novelty of travel wears with time, and one such as myself begins to long for the comfort and solitude of home. And not to say that home can't also be an abstraction, a way of feeling comfortable in one's own skin and surroundings. With no one to talk to for hours, no place to settle in and kick up my feet, I felt very much away from home. But even back "home" I often feel away from home, one of the factors in my deciding to make this trip to the city that had been my home for a number of years. But what do you do when your old home feels abandoned? The party has ended and the dance floor is empty. So now who's gonna dance with me?

One of my main concerns in penning this post is to get at the notion of two of my conflicting desires: the imperative desire to set out on a new path, and the fervent need to be close to something familiar, structured, and comforting. I dread and have always feared being stuck. I have that innate desire to move free, to break the shackles of conformity before prisoner's syndrome sets in, and yet it can get pretty lonely when you're out there running on your own. But then again, the reward is great for pushing yourself. And I guess that's as close to home as I'll get.

Take a Long Walk

San Diego Comic Con came and went. Unfortunately I didn't. Le sigh. I don't know what has been happening to me over the last couple of years that I hopelessly complicate short term plans. Right now I feel like a plane kept in the hangar too long, with nothing to show for flight time, just a couple of false starts. Things need to change for me.

Well aside from all the doom and gloom of missing one of my favorite weekends of the year, this just in more doom and gloom. Apparently Amy Winehouse decided to off herself rockstar style the same weekend some homicidal maniac goes on a rampage in Oslo. It is truly hard to wrap my mind around the true significance of a life suddenly being obliterated---all the unsaid goodbyes, the diaries left in cliffhangers, the routine hellos, comings and goings, erased. It's not enough to say a murder, a suicide, or even death is senseless. For the living death is the threshold of our most profound virginity. My most heartfelt best wishes go the survivors of these and other tragedies.

Okay so this weekend, instead of unplugging and taking a break out in the sun I swam through a bunch of old X-Men comics, and dug my feet in the dirt with Homestuck. I also flew through the entire Flight game, caught up with Octopus Pie, Vattu, and Bad Machinery, and beat Final Fight and Mazinger Z. I know, it kind of sounds productive. But it's not.

I spent a good long time pacing my apartment, realizing that all my life I've taken long walks to clear my mind, and how rare these days I make time for that. So I think I'm going to have to dedicate this next week to taking long walks, whenever I can get them in.

Before I forget Happy Birthday Emmy Cicierega and Natalie Tran. What a pair of angels those two. Okay, Monday approacheth. See you soon.

This is based on her early season 7 wounded fox, remorseful characterization. Notice her hair is relaxed even when tied back. The curl in her hair is noticeable, and her eyes are large and doe-like. Notice also that I watch this show as if I know these people in real life and care about their well-being and/or changes in appearance.

I also bought a usb gamepad with which to distract myself while I retrogame. It has already given a 14% boost to my weekend procrastination!

In the meantime I am soberingly planning my vacation around the fact that I didn't make the registration deadline for Comic Con (yet another convention missed). Still I will be out and about in San Diego, having fun in relative vicinity to the biggest pop culture event in the universe.

I have finally begun reading De:Tales by Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba. I feel so late at this, because I can glean from it both the raw joy de vivre of fresh ideas and emotions, and the sophomoric pithy of a newly awoken philospher. It vexingly makes me feel old, jaded, and far from the playing field. That can't be true, can it?

Haha I've delightfully procrastinated all day long, learning to play a new song, or rather, struggling through painful dissonance in my attempt to play a new song. Someone once said I sound like I'm playing with bricks. LOL.

I've been reading through the SAN archives once again trying to figure out where all the time went. I can't believe I've actually had things on my to do list for a year! Some of them I've gotten partially through, maybe a few I've actually completed, but others, it would seem to me I had just discovered or acquainted myself with a few months ago. Either I'm getting old and slow, or time is moving too fast.

You should go follow Strong Female Characters the tumblr because it is good. I just discovered what chillwave is. Emmy Cicierega has been doing cool arts lately. Magnolia Porter did this Dark Homer fanfic based on KC Green's fanfic. Also because KC Green oozes awesome I learned about Chris Kuzma's Kung Food, Smears, Multiples, and other Animation Gimmicks, and just now he posted 4th of July Comix.

This weekend was hot, and tomorrow it will be hotter and people will be lighting things on fire. I watched Black Dahlia last night, and tonight I may end up watching John Carpenter's The Thing. OH yeah, KC Greene did this comic. I've got all tomorrow to lay about insulated from the heat. I might watch 30 days of night, and a few tv shows. Probably NCIS. I've been meaning to see what's been going on there. No barbecue for me. Too damn hot.

Today at the library I picked up Moral Disorder (again) by Margaret Atwood, Little Nothings vol. 3 by Lewis Trondheim, American Virgin: Around the World by Steven T. Seagle and Becky Cloonan, De: Tales by Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba, and Lady Chatterly's Lover by D.H. Lawrence. During the drive there I wandered into a thought about peripheral thinking versus unilateral thinking. I now realize there is such a term as multilaterlism which probably has a greater import than what I am trying to express, still it irked me that in school we used the term "marginalized" (i.e. marginalized people, marginalized culture) which to me signified victimhood, rather than an intentional, and willful choice of ideology in contrast to the hegemonic culture. Or in other words, those of us at the margins, are identified by our relation to the mainstream and the dominant. Why can't it be that our ways are about periphery? Why can't we identify ourselves by our self-less consideration of others, in direct opposition to the competitive, monolithic ways of the dominant culture? Would it not be in our best interest to promote and encourage our unorthodox methods of tolerance, acknowledgement, courtesy, mutual respect, and interdependence? It is the dominant culture that breeds a first place(first world)/last place (third-world) way of thinking to give their greed and self-centeredness meaning.

And more toward the development of this ideology, this practical way of living and thinking, does it not create the foundation for a more stable, egalitarian society? If one were to make even the smallest decisions based on the greatest efforts of their peripheral vision, wouldn't we see more positive, considerate, and efficient habits developing in our lives and those around us.

During the drive a vehicle in the right lane driving the same speed as another car approached the end of his lane (it merged left). The driver, neither sped up nor slowed down to avoid collision with the vehicle next to him, nor was the driver in the right of way yielding in the sake of common sense. Luckily the driver in the right of way deferred at the last second, and the car in front of me, realized he would need to leave space in front of him to avoid hitting him when he slowed down. I'm sure the driver in front of me was using his peripheral vision, channeling his forethought to see how things could turn out, and calculated correctly to avoid entangling himself in that collision of egoes.

Okay, enough of that. I think I need a vacation.

Nick Edwards created a tutorial for one of his monstrously large splash pages. And then later in the week Vera Brosgol did a process piece about laying out Anya's Ghost. It was a win-win week for web cartoonists. Oh and did I mention that Jen Wang is doing a drawing every day in June? Also Jordyn Bochon is drawing all June too! This is like a birthday month miracle for me!

I like this Girl with the Skeleton Hand arc of Johnny Wander. Speaking of wandering, I wandered into Marcel O'Leary's blogspot, which was a great surprise.

This past week was surprisingly full for me. My sleep cycle was a bit more normal, and I spent more time on productive things, like moving my office and finally getting around to installing my wireless pci-E card. I also drew a few things. I watched X-men: First Class and Thor, and a few episodes of Inuyasha and Fist of the Northstar. I read a bit of Johnny Wander, some random Dharbin comics, a few of the recent Emitown comics, and discovered The Tiger's Wife via Jen Wang. I also managed to trick myself into getting my car's oil changed.

Besides that it was Father's Day and I am turning 31 next Wednesday. Time to start the week.

Jillian Tamaki's gorgeous illustrations for The Folio Society's Irish Myths and Legends call to mind the work of Yoshitaki Amano. Speaking of gorgeous illustrations the other night I discovered Studio Mushi's Kanashimi no Belladonna (1973). Apparently Osamu Tezuka broke away during production of this film to focus on his manga, and the studio subsequently went bankrupt. Still the visuals of this arthouse, semi-animated erotic film leave a large impression.

I inexpilcitly started doodling a young viking, and stumbled upon a new process for digital inking.

And then I daydreamed about owning a jet-pack. Sorry if it's not an accurate drawing, I don't currently own a jet-pack.

Happy Sunday Everybody,

Have you ever thought about letters? Epistles I mean. Writing was, at some point, little more than a way for people to communicate to each other over great distances. Messengers would travel between kingdoms. Prophets would address cities. Biographies would be detailed in the walls of dead kings to warn and educate visitors or robbers. There was always an intended audience is my point. These days, writing is so commonplace, especially journal writing, private writing, that the idea of sending out a message, or having a specific person or persons in mind is all but forgotten.

This weekend it rained, and I watched Into The Wild. The story got me thinking about my own youth and ideals and stories I've read about young men setting out in the spirit of Ralph Waldo Emerson, undoing the shackles of society, purifying themselves of its toxins. When I left for college I actually had a copy of Walden and Civil Obedience with me. I harbored those same fantasies of naturalism. But I think if I ever tried to write a similar story, it would be similar to this film. There are moments of clarity and revelation that occur throughout the life of an adventurer. I'd say more than half of them accompany or immediately follow tragedy. Those lessons are the invaluable spirit of our existence, the one thing worth passing on.

On that note let me share this tremendously poised comic by Ryan Andrews, Our Blood Stained Roof. Brittney Sabo also scored points with the internet for this triumphant message for girls and women. Speaking of messages, this article by Kemari regarding the #yasaves twitter hashtag and the article that inspired it, was eloquently written.

Hey, It's May 29th. Tomorrow's my sister's birthday. The day after that is Memorial Day. A lot of things happened on this day in history involving people coming back into power, or treaties being signed. One year the inventor of Coca Cola put out an ad in the Atlanta Journal. It's all pretty dry to me.

So I discovered Eat That Toast. It's delicious. Also Ed Piksor wrote this awesome post on the comic book classic 64-color chart. I got to watch and chat during a livestream by Jen (glassass on tumblr) who was brought to my attention by daleof.

My neck and back have been killing me all week. I've resorted to taking some NSAIDs I had precribed a year ago for a different injury. They're good right up until I suddenly feel itchy all over and my veins decide to either stick out, or sink in.

This week I also managed to blank my firefox profile by trying to reinstall firefox 3.6. Why did I do that? Well, because not all my extensions were compatible with 4.0, and I thought it better to take a step backward than carry forward with something missing. Story of my life. But don't worry, I managed to recover an archived profile and start over from May 18. I lost a few days of browsing history but now everything seems good. Better than good. Now both 3.6 and 4.0 work flawlessly and stay in constant sync!

Hope everybody had a great weekend. I took a drive today and just aimlessly wandered--I know, a luxury in today's economy what with gas prices still hovering around $4. I' ve been trying to shake off this malaise that's been on me. It struck me that everything I do is sedate, carefully measured, predictable, uninspiring. I have no problem with prudence, but lately I've been needing an adventure, something spontaneous. I need to jump into an open canyon, spread eagle and divebomb the world. I need to brace my feet, then launch into the air and hit the ground the running. It's who I've always been, and it's what I've been missing for quite a while. It's why I feel like progress has eluded me. I'm not fit to stay in one situation for too long. I've got to ride the wind.

I've been meaning to comment on the fact that Youtube flipped the format of user video history and likes. It used to be that you could only see your most recently viewed 100 vids, but you could see an endless list of liked videos. Now my viewing history goes back indefinitely, while videos I liked (aka have archived without having added them permanently to my list of favorites) are limited to the last 100. Ugh. This kind of stuff drives an obsessive archivist crazy.

Meanwhile everybody is enjoying their butts off at TCAF and I am here preparing for next year with a jar of tears.

Mother's Day was also this weekend. I hope you at least called your mother and had a nice conversation with her.

Man! Furry Water looks cool. I've been caught up in something like 10 years of Wildstorm continuity trying to see how Stormwatch leads into the Authority, and also how the other titles ended up. It's laborious, and I realize now I tend to take on these grueling "fun research projects" despite the inherent contradiction.

I also started watching Adventure Time which is the best. No really, the best.

Hames is a guy who makes chiptune music. If you've been paying attention you'd know I love chiptune music. I discovered him through his twitter friend Lexxercise (Andrea Douglas)who was recently tweeting about D&D stuff with Dresdencodak.

Similarly, Kate Beaton's Lois Lane comics were inspired by this Dean Trippe/Daniel Krall Lois Lane story which I discovered after the fact. Do you ever feel like everything important is connected? Oooooooh!

On April 29th, Googlevideo goes off the air and you'll end up missing out on all this fine programming. I know, I know---It's sad to see things fizzle out of existence, and in the current rut of the world economy it seems like more things will go before things get back on an even keel. Or will they ever be back on an even keel? What the heck is a keel anyway?

I watched and read Coraline in their individual entireties this weekend. Both were ridiculously good. And then I listened to this Make Believers podcast. I am continuing to read the Supreme Power miniseries and will soon be jumping into the original Squadron Supreme story. I also started Heavy Liquid and finished the first Little Nothing book. I am a few chapters into Moral Disorder and The Penelopiad. I am extremely itchy and uncomfortable.

I had two Marie Callender's pot pies this weekend. They were delicious. I think I am going to go have some ice cream. I want to scan something I started drawing in my sketchbook but it looks fugly right now.

I've been reading a lot of Stormwatch lately to see how it all boils up to The Authority, which is one of my favorite superhero books. It seems I missed a lot of good stuff. I similarly started reading the Supreme Power GN which I am thoroughly enjoying. I think this grim and gritty turn in superhero comics is the right fit in an intelligent writer's hands. I guess I would rather have the young tykes be interested in Bone, Amulet, Smile, Flight Explorer, or any one of the brilliant young readers books being put out by alternative comic creators. Kids need mysticism, humor, whimsy, exploration, and light-heartedness. The uber-mensch genre just has so little to offer IMO.

I got thoroughly engrossed in Lewis Trondheim's Little Nothings. Delightful, ephemeral just as the days are. Autobio comics seem to fill the shelves of the collector like bottles of wine, each one more palatable with age and distinct from the other. Tonight I'm watching Amarcord. How's your Sunday shaping up?

I'm thinking of taking a weekend off of SAN to get my thought process back in gear. When I started this blog I just wanted an outlet for stray thoughts, but I had always hoped to get some form, structure, and motivation out of it. I feel like this blog needs to mature to keep on existing, as do I so perhaps a break would clear the air of any unnecessary need to meet an arbitrary deadline. After all it's the content that people come for, not just the frequent updates. Sigh. We'll see.

This weekend everybody was all looney over the moon being a few tens of thousands of miles closer than usual. I mean it only happens every 20 or so years, so probably the last time it happened I was still reading X-men comic books. In print I mean.

So what did I do this weekend? Read a bunch of X-Men comic books? No, it was Avengers which I never really cared too much for back in the day. But now superhero comics for me are archives of the strange bouts of the subconscious, the socio-political climate, and the insecurities and fantasies of its authors. So it's like Epic Verse, Holy Books, and Mythology and it's right here in the making!

It also rained a whole bunch this weekend.

I watched the Departed this weekend. I liked it a lot. I watched Infernal Affairs too, but I feel the former is a worthy departure from the skeleton of the original. It's amazing how two movies can be virtually the same, but thematically different animals altogether. Happy Sunday Everybody!

So if it's not too late to make some resolutions about the new year I thought I'd jump on a very important one. I vow to be more disciplined this year. I was watching that Iron & Wine video and listening to his ditty about applying discipline to his work: taking his kids to school in the morning then setting himself to work until it was time to pick them up; like punching the clock. Once upon a time I had that discipline. I never really learned to apply it well to things I love, or things I want to be better at. It seems the things I really care about I tend to drift away from, and this year I want to put my foot down. To the left is a drawing I started on a whim. I continued to work it up with my new faber-castell brush pens and a set of prisma color multi-tip greys I bought nearly a year ago and have seldom used. I had two sketches in my old sketchbook I was really proud of, in which I used the prismas, however, I can't show you them since it was stolen. In hindsight I wish I had used that sketchbook so often that I would not have left it in my car to be stolen. I wish I had taken it in with me that Sunday night to draw in. I wish I had the unwavering discipline to draw in it every night, and that it was full of so many sketches I would be backlogged on getting everything scanned in. And then there would be more discipline to apply. But at least I wouldn't be sulking here, ashamed of my own A.D.D.

Hey, I know it's the middle of the week, but it's a new year and new and crazy things might just happen from now on. I'm interrupting your usual week to bring you some musings straight from the source. So I found this: http://forgottenjunk.webs.com/baoh.htm

Let me explain. I'm kind of on an old school kick searching for the Crusher Joe OAVs to go along with a viewing of Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Martian Successor Nadesico, and possibly Cowboy Bebop. I'm not sure that these all necessarily fit into the same genre, but I think there is at least a link. For instance, it's been my undersupported suspicion that Bebop is a mashup of Crusher Joe and Lupin III. There's something about the cavalier, inexperienced lead male protagonist that beckons to my anime loving soul. This stuff is fun. But things have changed over the years.

So simultaneously I am on a separate vision quest to pinpoint what it is that was fun about anime of yore. Enter the forgottenjunk catacombs, collector of ephemera. We're kindred spirits really. I recommend checking out some of the Gaga Communications trailers. If that doesn't send you through a timewarp, then you probably weren't alive back then.

I watched the Crystal Triangle one and immediately was reminded of a pair of Sega games that haunted my childhood. I recall Rolling Thunder II and El Viento being a pair of games with interconnected stories. What impressed me then was the fully fleshed anime promotional artwork. Back in the 90's (not to mention the late 80's) anything that incorporated some anime artwork and hinted at a fleshed out story set my mind on fire. I would obsess about it and imagine how the story would play out. For this reason, I believed for many years that I loved video games. I discovered at some point in my life that I, at best, hold some cheerful regard for old 16-bit games, and only casually like playing video games in general.

But I've found that the luster on these things has all but faded. Is it because our feelings for them have changed? Is it because our expanded consciousness no longer feels stimulated by these things, or is it even just as simple as the context of their existence. January 16, 2010 half the month is gone just like that. I'll blink and half the year will have passed. I feel as though as I age I become more comfortable with ephemera. I will always be something of an obsessive documentarian of trivialities and minutia, but I think things have been slowly evening out through the years. I would say that my life is a testament to the triumph of the termite over the white elephant.

I now have all the things needed to fix my guitar so I suppose that will be what I will be doing this afternoon. If I can fit in tinkering with my bluetooth transmitter, maybe I will overcome the fear of permanently botching the job----or electrocuting/burning myself. Lately I have been clearing out a lot of old things on my dusty to-do list.

I watched Toward the Terra (1980), True Grit (2010), and Dune (1984) this weekend. And then I got back into BSG season 2. I'm trying to take a break from my favorite show Misfits while I wait for the 3rd season to begin airing sometime in the next 2 months. I guess I've had a lot of down time to catch up with my queue.

There's no promise of warmth and the mystery of life sprawling out in the midst of the night's winter reign. There are no vikings in the halls telling ghost stories, nor are there monsters prowling the castle. It's just a string of wet, winter nights until this planet turns and tilts in a favorable direction. Le sigh.

MMXI

2011: the Year of the Rabbit (come February 3). From what I can glean it will be a year of asceticism, quiet gentleness and beauty. That sounds pretty awesome.

This new decade breaks numerical correspondence with my personal age, where 2000 was an apt year to turn 20, and then in 2010 I made the leap from my twenties to my thirties, 2011 is too numerically obtuse to correspond to 31. So, I thought I might recap things that occurred when I was 11, and things that happened when I was 20.

On New Year's Eve of 1990 I was 10 years old. I was living with my Mom, my brother, and the younger of my two sisters in an apartment complex. That New Year we were moving into a house my mom had just paid a deposit on. I remember prank calling people that new year to say happy new year. I guess it wasn't much of a prank. The 90's decade was about to start off on a good note.

In 1991 I would have just been finishing the 5th grade and graduating to middle school, which was a few miles away. My elementary school was across the street from my apartment complex and I used to walk to school everyday. Now I would have to ride a bus to school everyday or rely on my mom or my friends parents for a way to and from school. Middle school would introduce me to other Filipino kids who would become my main social network, while I chose the academic high road in classes. I would get involved with hip hop dancing and the break dancing revival, as well as become infatuated with comic books and Japanese anime. Geekdom ahoy!

I lived through the end of the 90's and saw the year 2000 (thanks Conan O'Brien!) come to life. I was in my 2nd year of college, and just a few weeks away from getting my first apartment with my bestfriend. That year everybody was up in arms about Clinton leaving office and the Bush Regime taking its second stab at America's collective pocketbook and soul. This was probably the beginning of the current American political battlefield. George W. Bush was like a trail of oil in the water about to ignite and cut the ocean in half.

But the year 2000 also had a lot of promise for me personally. I was crawling out of my shell and beginning to open up to people. I was discovering a greater level of self-expression, and reaching for life long dreams and artistic pursuits, romantic pursuits. I left my teens that summer and forged a wild path into my twenties. In another year I would be legally old enough to get into a lot of trouble.

That said, here's Dog Fort.

Thank God for distractions during the holiday season. When you're broke, bored, and your back is aching it's nice to lay in bed and watch a season run of your favorite show, or eyeball cute girls online. Nothing gets me out of the holiday spirit better than solitary confinement.

So first off I already know this one's going to be way late. Some of my favorite web cartoonists are taking time off their regular schedules by using fill-ins and guest comics, so even though this blog is nowhere nearly as time consuming as keeping up a web comic/site I will be jumping on the bandwagon, so to speak, and letting my usual Sunday slip by surreptitiously. The twelve days of Christmas are nigh and no doubt people are thinking about the things they're going to buy for their loved ones, the things they want, or the effect of the things they've already got. No gift exchanging for me this year since my family is all far away and lost in the chaos of our own meandering lives. Sad, I know.

I've been thinking about my childhood and growing up poor. I can remember being one of those kids who wished for everything he could possibly think of. I wonder if I figured I had the freedom to wish for any and every thing since there was little possibility of getting anything. I also remember many years of straight up yearning: yearning for material things and also for abstract things: a new life, a more sentimental family, a change of scenery. The more I think about it, the more my life seems like the backstory for a supervillian.

It's too bad I'm just an average Joe, though. No tragic villiany, no superheroic struggle. No warm, loving family life. I'm one of billions of people who are mostly alone on the holidays with an average array of "stuff" around him, an ordinary job, an unspectacular nightlife. Here and there I've made piecemeal improvements to my life. Over time I begin to wonder if this accumulation of things and subtle changes amounts to something uncanny. I want to eschew the trite and traditional question of the meaning of life, and focus on what individual pieces accrue into over time. Think Ship of Theseus. I'm also asking the question for the sake of this blog, and for my life's work.

I caught an episode of Brew Masters this weekend wherein the head brewers wondered if the recipe for a 4 year old IPA called 120 had changed. They did, in fact, discover a change in taste through a sampling of 3 years of brewing. They subsequently decided to dial the recipe back to what it tasted like in 2006. Neat stuff.

Quick Change (1990) directed by and starring Bill Murray. I watched it. This weekend I also watched RED, and got into Elfen Lied. I have 7 more episodes of Lied. Somewhere I also started watching Dexter. These are good, bloody shows.

So I got ripped off last weekend. My bag was taken from my car and in it all my drawing tools, two digital cameras, and a heap of other important things---y'know my life. I've been doing my best to just go with it, shit happens, people steal things for whatever reason they do, and there is very little to do but file a police report and pray your stuff comes back. Losing stuff isn't as horrible as losing a loved one, or finding out you or a loved one have a terminal disease---or a zombie apocalypse. Let's face it, if anything this should serve as a forewarning to get my zombie apocalypse gear in order. Do you have a zombie apocalypse plan?

24-hour comics day was this past Saturday. Also web comics weekend and APE are around the corner. I'm really looking forward to getting to my first APE. I remember my first time attending each of the conventions I've been to through the years. Things are a little different being thirty, mostly older than a lot of the other attendees, older than some of the talent. I expect I'll have to overcome a little awkwardness, moreso without the old cigarette crutch I used to get on casually with strangers. I guess that's why they keep the bars open, huh? I wonder why it is I am so terrible at striking up witty conversation with people I've just met without some form of intoxicant? It's often like I'm back in grade school waiting out the moment when we'd all have to introduce ourselves to the class and say something pithy about ourselves. Contrast that with the first time you ever found yourself wandering through a group of drunk or high kids, spilling your guts about how wasted you were.

Drawing Upon Experience

I drew a bunch of things this week.

For instance, this girl who appeared as if from ether with no under-drawing, just brush-pen on paper. I'm a little proud of the delivery since I virtually suck at inking.

And then mid-week people I follow were drawing werewolf comics to celebrate the harvest moon. There was also this wonderful Pokemon project Steve Wolfhard began, but to me the werewolf stuff was the stellar stuff of good memories. Also a dog wandered into my work and I had to record it for posterity's sake.

Ripped from the headlines I found out about Sesame Street's difficult decision to axe Katy Perry from their casting call. I'm sure she is utterly devastated that she will not get to hold Elmo close to her bosom.

And then, I read stuff. Rebecca Dart did a page 100 entry about The Hawkline Monster and it made a big enough impression on me to go and find the book. And, no, I don't really read like a dandy in my boxers. Ok. Yes I do.

My sleep cycle done got broke. Have you ever considered the meaning of your day as related to when you rise and rest? I'm trying to grasp a metaphor for the meaning of a day based on the musical principles of measure, rhythm, and notation. For the most part our experience of a day or a cycle is relative to the passing of the sun overhead. I for one enjoy the sun, but the allure of the moonlight and cool night air is hard to deny. Eventually my body tires out and sleep is inevitable, except in those cases where I've willed myself awake.

Out of the movies that I've noticed playing lately I think I'm most interested in Winter's Bone. The American and The Town remind me of movies I've already seen. Sadly, my money is too tight to go piddling off $11 on a flick and $8 on a soda and a small popcorn.

I drew some things. I decided September would be Machete fan art month. The other thing is me discovering how the right tools can really help a true artist flourish. I drew these on the back of an old resumé with a clicky ballpoint pen I got from my car insurance office. Anyhow, I liked the excited expression so much I kept drawing hat kid. Although his hat kept changing and his facial anatomy was inconsistent I felt a little like I was channeling Winsor McCay.

the confines of a minute

Okay, so because over a hundred years ago people were dying in grisly factory and railroad accidents and unions shut down the country with a bunch of strikes we get a long weekend. You probably more or less knew that. I wish that this weekend would last a bit longer, though. And I hope it wouldn't necessitate going back in time and causing more people to needlessly die in stupid accidents that could have been prevented if greedy industrialists weren't such evil slave drivers. But then again you might say, would we be living in such an advanced society if they hadn't broken the backs of our ancestors? Well isn't that just selfish of us!

So long weekend.

I wish I didn't work the shit day job I do, but who am I to complain while my rent is paid and I have health, vision and dental. I'm living the American scheme. When I was a kid I thought I was talented enough to avoid this troublesome existence, and yet I trudged through that old troublesome existence to march myself through the college-industrial-complex only to end up in a different troublesome existence. Man, it sure is hard to exist.

I think the advent of public admissions to state sponsored colleges and universities must have been to an older generation what the world wide web was to my generation. The horizon must have looked immense for those early college freshmen. And now with the web, the generation immediately behind me must feel compelled to try their luck at internet celebrity and entrepreneurship while quietly going through the motions of college. But in the end it all boils down to the same thing--finding a route to wealth and continued existence. The concept of pulling oneself up by the bootstraps ever the more illusive.

So happy labor day people.

This weekend I learned a few things: 1) I am the best at making boxed mac & cheese 2) I am only okay at playing the guitar 3) I like ice cream a whole lot more than getting off my ass and being in public.

I drew some things, but as usual I am too lazy or to encumbered to get my scanner working and post them somewhere. So internet celebrity remains illusive. Also money.

I am going to endeavour to read a big chunk of Nemu-Nemu now that I've been lagging for 2 years. And I am still making my way through nedroid archives (currently Nov 17, 2008) and my google history (currently Dec 14, 2008). I feel kind of like Lenny from Memento. Its hard for me to reconcile 2 years of time. What has really developed in that time?

Speaking of things past, about 4 years ago before I completely ruined my life, I had a really spiffy, wooden drafting table that an awesome friend of mine bought for my birthday. I had to leave it at my friend's house since I couldn't take it with me to Wisconsin. Now I really miss it.

I am traveling through time

Hi, I am traveling through time. Or at least through the archives of time. It has been probably a solid month since I started working my way through all of Nedroid's livejournal archives, and I've stumbled upon some wonderful, heartwarming, outrageously funny moments in his correspondence with fans and friends. Simultaneously I've been going through my own google search archives and pinpointed what I was doing during that span of time. This is kind of like a memory jog, but also like one of those split stream movies where we follow two or more characters. You know, something like Sliding Doors, Time Code, or Trading Places.

Anyway, I don't have much to link dump this weekend since I've been soaking up what's left of the summer. Had some barbecue, swam, and played guitar with a lot of good company. As another season drifts into the greyness of memory I just wanted to take stock of what's been going on, what I am anticipating, and what I hope will come. Do you ever do this?

I am at this moment reading volume 6 of Scott Pilgrim, anxiously awaiting Octopus Pie vol. 1, and Remake by Lamar Abrams. I learned about Remake and Adhouse books through Radiomaru's blog archive. Other things I gleaned from his blog were: Donjon by Joann Sfar and Lewis Trondheim, these cool bands and songs, these cool books, and that he is good friends with Brandon Graham, whose King City vol. 1 I enjoyed immensely.

Hey you guys! I'm also getting better at playing the guitar! I should make a video or somethin'. Well, I've got a bunch of other stuff to do so that will have to wait. Cross your fingers and wish that I'm able to get Windows 7 installed in my rig soon.

I bought myself a gee-TAR this weekend. It's nothin' fancy, just something I can learn to play on. I bought it at Best Buy--aka--the evil empire.

I am rapidly/rabidly becoming a fan of Wil Wheaton's opinions.

I built a bookshelf tonight. It was a cheap walmart MDF board type. It sucks but it will do for now. I watched the first episode of Dr. Who serial 1 the other night. It did not suck. I have yet to watch Omoide before I return it tomorrow morning. And then I have to send my Lacie up for repair, and think about repairing my backbeat bt adapter. It sucks not having my music on the go.

I have been reading comics again: The Authority, Invincible, and Blade of the Immortal and Planetary. They are all fine, enjoyable reading. I have also officially begun American Gods. I am counting on getting my surroundings organized so that I can actually enjoy these streams of inspiration, and not feel burdened by them, or in some way restrained from processing them into useful art and ideas. That is perhaps my most central resolution right now. Wish me luck and have an excellent week, my friends!

Its easy to become enamored with Becky Cloonan. She is the dreamiest: Myspace, Twitter, Blogger, Deviantart.

On a whim I started reading Tin Tin: The Seven Crystal Balls. It is easily inspiring in its fluidity, attention to detail, and masterful use of gesture. Hergé is the man.

Well, then, the other night as I was reading through the list of Eisner winners I stumbled upon Cameron Stewart's Sin Título, which I had put off reading for some time. It turns out it's very suspenseful, full of detail, and graceful gesture. And then I got to this page and the comment about the Inca piqued my interest. I google Inca from the Seven crystal balls, half expecting something about some lame Indiana Jones movie when: oh crap! That is spooky!

While we're still near the topic of the Eisner awards I delightfully encountered the work of Marian Churchland who seems poised to take over the comic scene. Well done Marian, I am overjoyed to become acquainted with your work.

Despite missing Comic-Con for another year in the last 3 years straight I've had a very comicky weekend. I read Paul Pope's 100% in one sitting. It is one of the best, most fluid and interesting things I have read. His notes at the end are very enlightening about comics as an idiom. You should pick it up.

Where does the time go

Some doodles I did recently above. One or two maybe t-shirt designs i'm working on. Or possibly all three, or none at all. It all depends.

I need to get the beast moving.

This week I've been paralyzed by a) an operating system that doesn't want to install, b) an external hd that doesn't want to write, c) a severe case of clutter and indecision d) a sudden suspicion that I am passing a kidney stone. Pray very hard that the latter is merely a suspicion and nothing more.

I did get out and watch Inception this weekend, and now find myself somewhere between Roger Ebert's glowing praise, and the expected killjoy criticism of the average art house snob. As far as Mr. Nolan's work is concerned, I think he has not surpassed the monument of Memento as a ground breaking film and structure. Has anybody else noticed, though, that all of his films are about a hero in crisis?

I read all of Rice Boy recently. Evan Dahm is an excellent story teller, and someone who doesn't get too fidgety about putting their artwork on a pedestal.

Harvey Pekar passed away this past week and Tom Humberstone made an appropriate dedication to him with the ending of his 100 days project.

As usual I am late at discovering things, such as Artbomb.net

I have plans this week to get my new rig up and running and then promptly getting started on a new website. I will also attempt to watch Infernal Affairs and the Departed, but after that I think I'll have grown sick enough of Leonardo diCaprio. Could there be painting and artmaking in the near future? That is also a very likely occurence, yes. However, I also have this blasted day job, and responsibilities to attend to, such as getting the title of my vehicle in my name, getting an oil change, and buying household sundries. Oh the busy life of a self-indulgent bachelor. Happy Monday everybody.

Out of Obligation

Have you ever felt trapped in a situation based on a promise you made or a principle you keep? I'm in one of those right now, and it's not anything new to me. I'm an idealist, after all, and I perceive that good comes out of waiting out, and doing the right thing, and just believing there is good coming even if it is imperceptible. I don't always hold to this belief, but when I do I feel satisfied in the thought alone.

On few occasions I've questioned my resolve, doubted my optimism. I still wonder, if that is the sinister power of doubt, the beginning of a self-fulfilling prophecy, or just stark realism/rationalism settling into the old, weary bones of a skeptic.

Part of the reason I wanted to tackle the subject is because I also feel a misplaced frustration in trying to keep this blog running. Am I writing this out of obligation, out of a year and half old promise to quit smoking, change my life around, reinvigorate my creative spirit? Am I doing this out of old archival, referential habit, cataloging the days that continue to pass with minimal significance? That idea frightens me the most.

I had hoped this blog would help me wrestle out foggy ideas nagging me; that it would be a springboard for creative, spiritual, entrepreneurial endeavors, but it feels like the synthesis isn't occurring.

Another thing nagging me is the urge to move. I feel very isolated in my living situation right now. With this weekend's passing of the San Diego International Comic-Con and the first Vid Con in L.A. I feel stupid for being stuck in this cardboard, cultureless town barely scraping a living. Despite being easier to make a dollar stretch here, there is no wealth here. There is no social or economic mobility. There is no cultural growth. There is no hunger for change here, and it makes me feel alone and sick to my stomach. No matter how many exursions I take, how much I try to tap into the quiet redemption of the alternative and underground subcultures here, I feel unnaturally constrained. Makes me want to blow all my obligations and just skip town. Is that doable? Where do you live? Why do you like it there? Or alternatively what makes you want to skip town?

Man, I am sooooo unproductive. I think I've entered creative depression. I wonder if there are meds for this situation. Anyhow, it's late and today Americans will be watching explosives go off in the air while combat veterans cringe. It's quite a festive time as most Americans are adverse to the regularity of their lives and need some sort of holiday and ritual to convince themselves they are not cogs in the greater clockwork of our socio-political-economic system. Today we will gorge ourselves with food, alcohol, and arbitrary excess in the hope of finding some significance in our meager time with our families, friends, and acquaintances. We will revel in our traditions, and hope to grasp our own self-development in comparison to the children frollicking around us. And hopefully at the end of the night's festivities we will have acquired a sense of pride, a sense of fellowship, and some good anecdotes and leftovers to bring to work. Happy American Independence you silly creatures.

With the long summer days I feel the coming of more and more Sunday Night Noodles, as the day is to beautiful to squander in a shaded room. Don't you feel the same?

I discovered Mark Ronson, the Zutons, and Selah Sue this week. It's been an awesome week for music discovery.

I also discovered Red via the A.V. Club

More and more comic book movies are coming out for comics I had no idea existed.

Speaking of which here is Corto Maltese Ballad of the Salty Sea thanks to Paul Pope for the heads up on Corto Maltese.

I have the distinct suspicion that Porco Rosso is based on the Corto Maltese ethos.

Anyhow, I've got to get this week all plotted out, so starting late, ending early is the recipe for tonight. How are your summer plans going so far? Anything you're excited about yet?
