I'm sitting here zoning out in front of the computer with the tv on. I borrowed Superman 3 and Get Smart from the library. I am also still making my way through Mister X, and finished Leave It To Chance and Ultimate Iron Man.

It is unbearably hot outside and the air quality is terrible. There is some cheesy sci-fi movie on called Abominable, which apparently stars one of the guys from one of the Police Academy movies. I am considering scanning repair documents for my car, that got wet and molded recently, that I've kept myself from throwing away. Its a lackadaisical, unnerving Sunday.

Sorry everybody.

Here's something:
I've been toying around with digital painting and started this image of Happy Slip. In the original she had more of a doe-eyed skeptical look, but here she seems to be tired and suspicious. This is definitely going to take some work, but of the three paintings I tried out, this one is coming out the best. Sorry if this offends any of you happyslip fans out there. My apologies Christine.

So what can I tell you about Sunday, June 28, 2009. Well we've got 186 days till the end of the year. Also did you know that this is the only day of the year that has two perfect numbers in it? Today Billy Mays, world famous pitchman passed away in his sleep. He was the same age as Michael Jackson who passed away Thursday, the same day as Farrah Fawcett. I send out my heartfelt sentiments for the families, friends, and fans of these three exceptional human beings.

These images from the NASA's international space station make me appreciate abstract art. They are incredibly beautiful while remaining mysterious.

Well, that's all I have for now folks. I know I promised a piece on Nick Fury and The Black Terror this week, but its still in the works, as well as an excerpt from my forthcoming novella/roman-a-clef. More art on the way too! Have a decidely happy Sunday true believers!

Summer dis Summer dat

Happy Summer! June 21st is the official first day of the summer (here in the northern hemisphere), and it happens to be the day that Father's day lands on this year (here in the U.S.)-so happy fathers everywhere! It's the 172nd day of the year with 193 days left, so we're almost halfway through. Around the world this days also means: World Humanist Day, World Music day, National Aboriginal Day in Canada, Martyr's Day in Togo, and Father's day in Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon.

Today's SAN will be brief (as if that ever really happens) since tomorrow will be my 29th birthday and I'll be taking the day to celebrate, starting with lunch with my sister. I'll be celebrating my first birthday as a non-smoker since this past December. Let me tell you, the nightmares haven't disappeared so it seems now the struggle for my soul is reaching the crisis point. Please pray for me.

My birthday wishes go out to the late Al Hirschfield, Burke Breathed of the legendary Opus, Bloom County, and Outland strips; the inimitable Pete Rock; the talented Jim Breuer, and the scores of others who add a tick mark to their internal calendar today.

My old buddy Marc who now goes by the name Dj Marc, invented this summer mix:

Last night I lost a lot of sleep trying to figure out how to shift my entire zune library over to a flash drive, interspersed with watching R. Kelly's Trapped in the Closet 1-22 (comedy gold!!). The problem still remains that my zune collection will not see files from the flashdrive, and I am left to wonder if the flash drive being FAT32 has something to do with it. For those of you unfamiliar with file allocation systems, I did not just make a derogatory obesity statement toward my flashdrive. Just sayin'.

I am searching for a great deal on an entry level graphics tablet. I was looking at those VisTablet's until I read all the negative reviews about people from the company spamming review forums. Bamboo's are still affordable, but I'm holding out for something . . . unique. If anybody knows of a great deal on an Intuous refurb or something, please send me a message. I want to make some beautiful art for you people!

Earlier this week I cut my wrist trying to sneak back into my apartment through the window. This old window was so ghetto that I used to be able to bend the frame so that the latch disengaged and the window would slide, but the window decided to shatter this time. And let me tell you, building windows do not shatter into tiny harmless pebbles like car windows, or like in action movies. No, they shoot out at the veins of your wrist and slice the flesh out of you.

I have some wonderful screen caps to share of a now new favorite classic action movie I caught this week: James Bond - Live and Let Die

I'd never seen this particular Bond film before, but as far as corny blaxploitation bond films go this one is par exellence. And did ever mention that Jane Seymour is a stone cold fox?

Oh Yeah! I also caught Tomorrow Never Dies and let me say this: Michelle Yeoh is similarly smokin' hot.

Next week I will be getting into a topical discussion about comic pulp heroes Nick Fury and The Terror, and hopefully showing off a little bit of my art.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Make Yo Life Bettah

Okay so I'm hoping I can make regular posts on this new idea: MYLB - Make Your Life Better. What's that you ask? Well it's a simple idea. I ask myself: What recurring problems can I take care of right now? And sometimes I ask myself: Is this really working, or do I need to try a new approach? For me its important to really break things down right now, so I hope you don't mind going for the ride.

I wanted to talk about the difference between undesirable and dysfunctional. I'm thinking of undesirable things as things that have short term solutions such as being hungry, needing gas in your car, or being late to an appointment after work. Easy solutions would be to stop and buy something to eat, stop and get gas, and speed to your appointment if you were already running late. Alternate solutions would be to stop and eat the lunch you brought from home, take a short cut to your appointment, and get gas on the way back.

Now when I say dysfunctional, I'm talking more about things that are either recurring, or interrelated. If you're always late to your appointments it would only be logical to either leave earlier, or schedule your appointments on a non-work day. Or maybe when you're hungry you have a habit of spending ten bucks on a greasy burger combo that just makes you feel tired & unproductive, on top of burning a hole in your budget. Then you might consider saving the $10 to buy groceries to pack yourself a healthier and less expensive lunch. Maybe you have a problem of not noticing how low your gas tank gets through the week because of a combination of being pressed for time at every turn, making multiple trips to get food, to go back to the office, to get to appointments, as well as speeding from place to place effectively expending more gas than you need to or want to. Oh and you're spending $10 a day on burger combos that make you feel tired and forgetful, and besides that was your last $10 so now you have nothing to get gas--guess you'll have to wait till next paycheck.

Its really easy to fix the undesirables, but to fix the dysfunctionals we have to really pay attention to how things are related and what common results we get from typical decisions. I hope this is all helpful food for thought.

And now this made me smile

leave it to chanceultimate iron manMr. XI finished reading Kid Amazo, got through the Fragile Creature storyline of the Concrete book, and watched 2 episodes of Mushi-shi (not bad). Of the others One Bad Rat and Tarnished Angel did not disappoint. Chunky Rice was delightfully ephemeral. That pick was definitely the solo-protagonist show. Next up I've got Leave it To Chance Book 1, Ultimate Iron Man Vol. 1, and Mister X (ooooooOOOoohhh). One of these days I'm going to draft (or re-draft I should say) a wishlist of graphic novels I want to read. This year I've made progress through Bone, Starman, Sandman, Zot!, AstroCity, and others. I am admittedly a comic-book uber geek whose just missed a decade or so of good readin'.

Also I occasionally have time to sketch and doodle on post-it notes or index cards that I have laying around. What we have here is (going clockwise from top left)
  1. A spider-man inspired expression of someone else's bullshit
  2. impressions of dealing with a day, probably exacerbated by aforementioned b.s.
  3. a sad retrospective of the corny Jim Lee inspired drawings I used to do in junior high; this guy is content to have the ridiculously unidentifiable skull of some beast on his head,
  4. a self-portrait from my driver's license in which i've given myself an extra 5lbs. in the face and the calloused appearance of someone facing time in the joint.

The thrill is gone

Do you ever get that overwhelming feeling of high hopes gone sour, lackluster, and generally not worth additional effort? I feel like its something I've battled most of my life, and I'm probably a lot better at keeping up the fight, but the damn feeling lingers like a poltergeist.

I remember I used to tell people that I felt gray, a cigarette wasting away between my fingers, feeling like the eponymous desperado from the Eagles song. Feeling like a bag of weary bones with a yoke on his back and another sunrise to face.

I'm writing this as the Sunday light slowly fades away, and I am left with the darkness of night to finish my chores--another weekend having slipped between my fingers.

So if you can't tell I worked through the weekend again, though this time I was able to work around my own schedule. It's late. Sunday Afternoon has passed and I am eking out what meager enthusiasm I have left. Man I need a nap.

this video reminds me of film school. the fun parts, i mean.
