I Think of All This Time

Uploaded by on Jun 2, 2011

This is my 180th post. All week I was looking forward to being productive.  I had an inkling of an idea for a shirt design for the 6th comics on tees challenge, which happened to be based on Neil Gaiman's The Day the Saucer's Came.  And then with the realization that May 4th was rapidly approaching I had a silly idea for a May the 4th be with you t-shirt.  But I ended up getting sidetracked, things came crashing down around me, and then MCA died, and then there I was penned up at home drinking by myself on Cinco de Mayo.

I guess I should look at the bright side.  I got to watch Lexxy stream and had a light bulb moment.  I read a bunch of Worm World Saga, which is gorgeous.  I discovered Dororo.  I had to return my library books and wasn't able to get back The First Man, but I did get back BPRD: Plague of Frogs and I nabbed Marian Churchland's Beast, Uncanny X-Force : Deathlock Nation, Girl Comics, RASL: The Drift, Junko Mizuno's Princess Mermaid, The Living and The Dead by Jason, Hellboy: The Right Hand of Doom, Hellboy: The Troll With and Others, H.P. Lovecraft's Haunt of Horror by Richard Corben, Children of the Sea by Daisuke Igarashi, and Mitsuru Adachi's Cross Game!

But I might be overcompensating for missing TCAF. Also The Avengers movie came out.  Here's arts:

This lady I drew as practice for some new techniques I'm trying in Sai. She is a non-descript lady and looks very bored.

This is a portrait of Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys. RIP MCA. You will never be forgotten.

This is a sketch I did of my friend's dog, Roddy. He's is kinda hecka cute, so I drew him.
And this is a sketch I did of Bolin, because that just seems to be the thing to do right now on tumblr and in LoK fandom in general.  Case in point: Hino

Next I did some sketches of something. You can guess that something, and maybe I will reveal to you the full color image. That should properly motivate me to actually do the full color version

I think I lost a lot of time this weekend worrying, and then getting lost in a giant playlist I made of Futurama, Adventure Time, Touch, Kimagure Orange Road, Psych and other stuff.  It was definitely a weekend of feeling down and off.  April was  a really rough month on me, and May is kind of the wildcard one.  June is definitely my freedom month, and July.  Well July is just too far away.

Time just keeps slipping through my fingers, and I find myself glancing back trying to figure out how so much of it got behind me.

I really hope I can start making money from this art thing, because these lottery tickets are just piling up and I don't know how much more of the day job I can take.  Art gods, do you hear me?

Never Mess With Sunday

A few weeks ago I was distressed to learn that Danny Zabbal's Journey to the 6th Dimension is no longer available to read on the internet. I have the confounding tendency to bookmark things I want to read, and not return to them for months, and in this instance I realize I may never get to read what looked like a very fun & mystical story. I've emailed him to see if it is indeed missing from the internet.

In the meantime go read his more recent work here. Drawn Paper Scissors introduced me to the work of Yan Nascimbene's beautiful travel themed watercolors. Tumblr is just filled with a gajillion brilliant sketchy blogs such as A Pint of Strychnine by cigueducami and Viva la Resistance by Preoprix Here are some good deviantarts I stumbled upon as well: Tuooneo and ReillyBrown.

I've attached another Migret sketch I worked on 2 weeks ago.  I haven't been in the mood to develop things beyond designing a helmet that I'd been neglecting to draw.  Toward the end of the week I started doodling some characters with the principle interest in designing around eye expressions.  A pair of mangled cutesy eyes became the baby cthulu sketch that I've worked up into color.

I missed Stumptown again this year because I'm dead broke.  I wish I had some money so that I could go fly to TCAF next weekend. I also wish I could buy one of these spiffy Monoprice tablets Ray's been gushing over.  This same old song and dance is getting tiresome.  I have this dream that I'll launch a website with some comics on it and know how to monetize things right away and within a few months walk away from my day job.  I'll begin collaborating with my 15 year old self and flesh out whimsical story concepts I had as a kid into beautiful, lush worlds with complex characters, and intelligent stories told in refreshing ways.  And then maybe that year I'll be at all of these festivals and shows selling comics & art instead of trying to finish reading my library books before they're due.

If you Cat Rackham, join 'em.

Squidface and the Meddler covered TCAF. Overall great website.

There are a lot of great arts here.

It was Steve Wolfhard's Birthday at TCAF. Cat Rackham Loses It debuted there, and then this week Nedroid inspired this International Draw Cat Rackham Day.

Warren Ellis linked this. And it is awesome.

Ida Eva aka Jellyvampire is great.

I've been drawing He-Man a lot inexplicably. So then I drew a comic.

Earlier in the week I started this portrait of Kippery. She's great. I have some great ideas for comics I want to do now, including resurrecting a bunch of old ideas. I'm really excited to find some time to actually work this month. Wish me luck!

Tear-CAF-inated

130 Posts! Woot!

I caught up with WJC's Gungle. Good stuff. And then I see he and John Allison are contributing to this Nelson Anthology by Rob Davis. Winning!

Meanwhile everybody is enjoying their butts off at TCAF and I am here preparing for next year with a jar of tears.

Mother's Day was also this weekend. I hope you at least called your mother and had a nice conversation with her.

Man! Furry Water looks cool. I've been caught up in something like 10 years of Wildstorm continuity trying to see how Stormwatch leads into the Authority, and also how the other titles ended up. It's laborious, and I realize now I tend to take on these grueling "fun research projects" despite the inherent contradiction.

I also started watching Adventure Time which is the best. No really, the best.

Thanks to Academy of Art Animation Notes for bringing the completion of Rain Town to my attention.

Sometimes I really miss New Jack Swing.

Pencil It In

John Allison should have gotten into Marvel Strange Tales with this one. Oh well, at least he was magnificent enough to inspire this excellent fill-in by Lissa Treiman.

Warwick astounds me again with this unfortunately abandoned 2 pager, Blue Lula.

Toronto Comic Arts Festival: Pencil it In from Toronto Comic Arts Festival on Vimeo.

Next weekend I will be at home crying into a jar to remind me to plan for TCAF 2012.

I have been reading:

http://citriccomics.tumblr.com who also makes music.
http://oddlookingbird.com/ who also does animation. Thanks, of course, for the latter from the former.

I've also put some time into reading Stormwatch v2, The Authority, Supreme Power: Nighthawk, and Batman Hush. I've read a chapter or two of Elantris and Moral Disorder, and have a few left in The Penelopiad.

I also drew things. 1) A journal comic about getting in hot water at work 2) Some practice at drawing women from ref. Figured I had to use these mis-addressed Victoria's Secret Catalogues to good use 3) A drawing I was compelled to do after hearing the news 4) & 5) Warm up sketches
for a dumb comic I want to do about Hordak from the She-Ra cartoon.

For Your Health

I am going to a birthday party this afternoon, so I've got to cut things a little short this week. I hope that's not too off-putting.

So this link arrives in my email:

and I immediately call to mind:

luxyferum — May 16, 2007

but even that reminds me of:

Shikamaru250 — May 14, 2008

and leads me somewhat full circle to:

xiyakx — August 30, 2009

Can someone please explain to my brain what the common thread is in these songs?

Steve Brule - For Your Health

Yes, sometimes I draw stuff. Don't drool its just Steve Brule. Now go out and make your own technologies.

Random things I did this past week:

1) Bought a cookies and cream shake to sneak into Nightmare on Elm Street
2) Realized tickets were sold out 5 minutes before showtime and 5 minutes after I expertly hid my shake in my inner jacket pocket
3) Broke my air mouse usb receiver while trying to steal internet at work and output streaming video to the conference room hdtv.
4) Found a medium (5.75"x8") soft black cover piccadilly sketchbook for $7; eat that $20 moleskine!
5) snuck a caramel latte into Nightmare on Elm Street with tickets in hand; soon after wished I had just drank it during the car ride home and saved myself $11.
6) sketched Dr. Steve Brule (did you see it?)

This afternoon go and check out:

DHARBIN
(Dustin Harbin)
Secret Mystery Diary (Rebecca Clement)
Illustration Friday
TCAF
Super Mario Crossover

then call it a day.

See you soon.
