I got the Powaaaaah!

Hi there,

My name is Del, King of Siam, and blogger of the Sunday Afternoon Noodle. Fabulous secret powers were bestowed upon me the day I began taking Paint Tool Sai seriously and exclaimed, "I got the powaaaaah!"

This past week I began painting a lot in PT Sai. I've only fiddled with it a bit until now, despite getting dozens of glowing reviews by online artists I follow. I feel like things are starting to click for me artistically, and that I might just end up on a steady stream of productivity.

I'll be reading Orc Stain by James Stokoe pretty soon. Somebody linked me to Adam Atomic's Bomber Planet, a few months ago, but it wasn't until recently I became aware of his other work.

Following up on some of the conversations going on about DCU's recent "empowerment" of female characters, I stumbled upon this excellent article by Comics Alliance. I have got to meet Laura Hudson. She is my hero.

I wish I could read Italian. I might enjoy this comic by Roman Muradov even more. I love Ryan Mauskopf's art.

These are process pics of another painting I started. I have trouble setting up compositions with just lines, so I decided to block in values first, then fine tune shapes with lines. I laid flats before I took a break.

I'm learning a lot of things while experimenting with Sai, hopefully those will translate well going back to traditional mediums. I hope to break out my acrylic paint soon, as well as my ink nibs.

I think part of my motivation has been watching the last 2 or 3 of Lexxy Douglass' streams. I like everything about her style.

Comin' up off the weekend funk

Did you know that 2009 is designated the international year of astronomy and international year of natural fibers? WTF?

Today, November 1, 2009, we celebrate All Saints Day, Day of the Dead in Mexico, World Vegan Day, Day of the leaders in Bulgaria, and the last day of the Ludi Victoriae Sullanae, oh those crazy Ludi Romani!

My plans for this weekend went awry. Saturday being Halloween I figured I'd get a jump-start on SAN, finishing up two previously previewed illos I had cooking, and then join the Halloween festivities. But rising early after a night-shift and some aimless web surfing proved too powerful over my waning will power and I gravitated back toward bed before noon, only to wake up in the eerie silence of 6pm on Halloween night. I ended up watching Apocalypto (a long overdue viewing) while trying to get my desk organized. I also read a chapter of The Comedians listened to the first disc of Girl in Hyacinth Blue and the first chapter of Pompeii by Robert Harris. What a night of gravitas! For some reason the theme from Heroes hung in the back of my consciousness. Curious.

These Lord of the Flies illos by Sam Weber are, well, fly.

I so rarely remember to check back in with the A.V. Club, but it's gems like this Eddie Campbell interview that bring me back.

Man it's late, and I've just run out of interesting things to share. Doesn't that bum you out when that happens? Like mid-conversation you just trail off and everybody goes into awkward self-reflexive silence. huh. Laterz mah peeplz.

Fire and Feast

On this day in the year 79 A.D. in the event of the feast day of Vulcan, Roman God of fire and smithery, Mt. Vesuvius erupted. That must have surely scared the crap out of everybody. In an unrelated event, approximately 1900 years and 1 month later my parents conceived me. Awesome, no?

Historically this day also marks the execution of Wiliam Wallace in 1305, George III declaring the American colonists seditionists in 1775, the first cry of the Filipino Revolution in 1896, the beginning of the Battle of Stalingrad during WWII in 1942, and also a ton of other non-polemic events. No seriously. Like space stuff and treaties and people being born.

Welcome to the noodle.

A Vado HD short film by Almostzero

A live action and animated film about Winsor McCay drawing Little Nemo for moving pictures. Worth the wait to see some amazing animation even by today's standards.

For those of you with less patience: a cut to the chase.

I recently discovered the work of KMR

at CGUnit
which has a giant list of equally enchanting artists in the side margin.

So look what came in the mail . . .

Zi6 arrives

Also I made lumpia.

lumpia!

I have the ten disk twin peaks gold box edition out from the library as well as Will Eisner's seminal Comics & Sequential Art, and a couple of life drawing books. Man I really want to get the lead out. Get it, get the lead out? Huh huh. I'm lovin' having the time to explore the stuff that really grabs me, but alas money's becoming a problem. So pretty soon here I might start putting stuff up for sale. The best way to go about it, I'm not quite sure of. I could use one of the traditional online stores (redbubble, cafepress, etsy, zazzle), or maybe even try the ebay thing. I really don't know at this point, but I'd love suggestions. One idea I had for another blog was to draw someone's portrait for a donation. I've only done one thus far, and it was for a penny donation my buddy Ace made. Does any of this sound like a good idea to you all? Drat! Talking to myself again.

Have a happy Sunday everybody :)
