This weekend I tried to read a little Metal Gear Omnibus. I read Last of the Greats in it's entirety, and thought it wasn't so great after all. And I watched a pretty funny episode of Psych. It was an altogether unproductive weekend, as I didn't draw much, write much, and barely got outside. I don't know why I'm acting so depressed lately. I know there are money things . . . That shouldn't really be a deterrent to just going outside and getting some sun, though.

I've noticed some really pretty landscapes lately, and I want to get into the habit of sketching enviromments in perspective, and being able to drop characters into scenes. That's a major weakness in my art. I also want to get some practice fine tuning my use of color. I was pricing copics and shinhan markers this weekend, but they are way out of my price range. Maybe that's just the universe's way of telling me I need to start using my watercolors. While I'm at it, why not use my acrylics, and my crowquill? I wish my brain wasn't so boggled all the time. If I could just realize I have all the tools I need to at least start practicing my art----I would----I would, well, just finally be working.

I watched Toward the Terra (1980), True Grit (2010), and Dune (1984) this weekend. And then I got back into BSG season 2. I'm trying to take a break from my favorite show Misfits while I wait for the 3rd season to begin airing sometime in the next 2 months. I guess I've had a lot of down time to catch up with my queue.

I did some sketches: 1) a clothing impaired woman, 2) a couple of things inspired while watching Fist of Fury, 3) a portrait of online friend becceroooo




I so can't wait for the spring to be here. Though I'm glad I'm not caught in a blizzard every other day, this windchill and occasional rainstorm is creatively hampering. It's usually the opposite for me, but I suppose growing old erodes the magic of cold, dark nights. There's no promise of warmth and the mystery of life sprawling out in the midst of the night's winter reign. There are no vikings in the halls telling ghost stories, nor are there monsters prowling the castle. It's just a string of wet, winter nights until this planet turns and tilts in a favorable direction. Le sigh.

the confines of a minute

Okay, so because over a hundred years ago people were dying in grisly factory and railroad accidents and unions shut down the country with a bunch of strikes we get a long weekend. You probably more or less knew that. I wish that this weekend would last a bit longer, though. And I hope it wouldn't necessitate going back in time and causing more people to needlessly die in stupid accidents that could have been prevented if greedy industrialists weren't such evil slave drivers. But then again you might say, would we be living in such an advanced society if they hadn't broken the backs of our ancestors? Well isn't that just selfish of us!

So long weekend.

I wish I didn't work the shit day job I do, but who am I to complain while my rent is paid and I have health, vision and dental. I'm living the American scheme. When I was a kid I thought I was talented enough to avoid this troublesome existence, and yet I trudged through that old troublesome existence to march myself through the college-industrial-complex only to end up in a different troublesome existence. Man, it sure is hard to exist.

I think the advent of public admissions to state sponsored colleges and universities must have been to an older generation what the world wide web was to my generation. The horizon must have looked immense for those early college freshmen. And now with the web, the generation immediately behind me must feel compelled to try their luck at internet celebrity and entrepreneurship while quietly going through the motions of college. But in the end it all boils down to the same thing--finding a route to wealth and continued existence. The concept of pulling oneself up by the bootstraps ever the more illusive.

So happy labor day people.

This weekend I learned a few things: 1) I am the best at making boxed mac & cheese 2) I am only okay at playing the guitar 3) I like ice cream a whole lot more than getting off my ass and being in public.

I drew some things, but as usual I am too lazy or to encumbered to get my scanner working and post them somewhere. So internet celebrity remains illusive. Also money.

I wonder if it's too late to catch Machete?

Never settle for a rough draught

I recently searched for the work of Gerhard of Cerebus fame and was just blown away by his range. And then I thought it might be fun to spotlight some of my favorite ink draftsmen.

Gerhard - I have yet to devote the time to reading Cerebus, but having glanced at Gerhard's lovely backdrops hundreds of times I'm convinced I am in love with the atmosphere of this story. It may have actually been the first comic to interest me in black & white comics.

Gustave Dore - I can't say enough about the dedication to perfection inherent in his work. It's superhuman.

Travis Charest - I had no idea what Mr. Charest had been up to since I quit mainstream comics in the mid-90's, but then I discovered his Spacegirl series and realized he's still as good now as he was then. He's like Jim Lee without all the squiggle and fakery with a healthy influence of Moebius.

Leinil Francis Yu - While I was away from comics this guy did what Travis Charest did years before. Solid figure drawing, dynamic layout, with a bit of stylistic flair. They both also make it look very easy.

Martin Wagner - There is something so articulate about his drawings in Hepcats, similarly to Cerebus, I think just draws in the reader naturally. Hepcats, Cerebus, and few others are canon in my indy comics favorites.

Nabiel Kanan - I have not gotten over Nabiel Kanan's Exit since the first time I read it. When you're talking about black and white composition, using texture and line creatively to tell a story, and breaking down forms and values you can not leave out this masterpiece!

Winsor McCay - All I can say is duh! Winsor McCay would make Chuck Norris cry in a staring contest.

Moebius / Paul Chadwick - Anybody who knows comics knows how much of a lasting impression Moebius has left on the medium. And anybody whose even glanced at Paul Chadwick's art knows there is subtle genius behind his composition and draftsmanship. But it takes a certain kind of person to suspect that they are one and the same. I was reading Fragile Creature not too long ago and picked up the reference to He Man and the masters of the universe. So I did a search of the art department attached to the film, but failed to find Chadwick's name in the billing. Instead, one Jean Giraud was listed! And the thing is their art doesn't even look similar on close inspection, but then I thought if I were a genius draftsman like Moebius, why would I draw under a pseudonym with a similar drawing style? I would rather draw upon a different foundation for drawing if I wanted to draw under a different identity! So there you have it! Prove me wrong naysayers!

Saturday Night Special, Sunday is Kid's Day

So before I get to the regular stuff, I wanted to mention I saw Watchmen last night. I'll get around to putting up the painful review. It will be like prying the wings off of a small insect. Look forward to it!!

But for now Sunday is Kid's Day . . . is Kid's Day . . . is Kid's Day. I've been meaning to post something of an ode to the pregnant imagination of childhood, the host of whimsy. And boy do I have a list of stuff to hoist on your grey matter, starting off with a big salute to yesteryear cartoonists: Hergé(3), Mary Tourtel & Alfred Bestall of Rupert, Mordicai Gerstein, Crockett Johnson(3), C.C. Beck(2), Moebius(2), and the inimitable Winsor McCay(3). I am gaining interest in Amelia Rules!, Aki Alliance by Ryan Estrada, as well as Akiko/Miki Falls creator Mark Crilleywhose work I've known about for about 10 years. Also the charming macabre of: Emily, Coraline, Edward Gorey and Stefan Bucher of Daily Monster. Do any of these artists and creators have inherent relevance to each other? Hardly, they just top my list as people with superlative imaginations. I'm sure there's more, but of time and space there is not much.

Last but not least a tribute to the wonderful imaginations of Audrey Kawasaki, Amy Sol, Barnaby Ward, and Jason Levesque.
