It was an intense, difficult week for America.  On Monday, the Boston Marathon was rocked with two explosions that left 3 dead and many injured.  Through the week law enforcement and the FBI worked on identifying suspects and gathering information, and by the end of the week we were left with a suspect in custody in critical condition and one dead.  A fertilizer plant in West Texas suffered a devastating explosion that left at least 15 people dead and hundreds injured or lost.  In China the H7N9 continued to claim more lives.

Today I woke up slightly hungover.  I had to return Stardust Memory and Myspace DHP v5 today, so I swapped them out for What I Did by Jason, Fringe v1, R.E.D., The Losers, Seven Soldiers of Victory and two DVD's:  Gundam 0080: War In the Pocket and Dirty Pair.  I'd say that's a good haul.

I read another great Sam Alden comic, The Worm Troll.   I learned about David Gaddis & a few other great early web comics creators because of this article about Modern Tales.

Today I woke up at 9:30am.  To shut my alarm off and then sleep for another hour.  We went bowling for my roommate's nieces' belated birthday party and hit up the pizza parlor.  It was a fun day and I love his extended family.  He and his sister make a hilarious duo.  We ended the visit w/ a lazy watching of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.  I played with a pitbull and a bunch of kids.  I was pretty happy.  I also bowled pretty well too.  At home I got into an impromptu fanart for Julie's Lost In The Vale comic.  I felt very vulnerable and self-critical about my art and lack of professional accomplishment.  It came out while catching a quick workout with Adam.  Tonight, as Monday rolls in, I can smell hotdogs roasting on a grill a few apartments upwind of me.  I'm going to dissect the week in a second as we head into the last week of April and near the last month of Spring.  Tonight I watched Little Witch Academia!

On Monday (4/15) I was following developments on the Boston Marathon bombing.  I read a few of those pixel tutorials, and somehow ended up on 4chan.  Then found out about a newer Yoshitaka Amano book, Hero, and pined away for an Android mini-pc. By the wee early hours of Tuesday morning (4/16) I was perusing old bookmarks.  Wednesday (4/17) I spent a ridiculous amount of time and effort trying to set up a windows media center stream over our home network.  I failed.  I'm not sure what happened Thursday (4/18) but I know I didn't get much sleep nor much done.  On Friday 4/19) I was just happy to be done with the work week, so we went on a journey to get some Angry Orchard Cider, barely made it back, and then I drank like a mad man.

This week I kind of buckled under the pressure on completing the t-shirt design for the boy's birthday this next weekend.  It was a week of struggle and uncertainty. Thankfully I had friends to share a laugh with.

Welcome to March

I'm moving this week so things might get a jumbled.  So far this week has been about the impending March 1st sequester, Tina Fey & Seth Macfarlane swearing off hosting the Oscars, and Jennifer Lawrence winning everybody's hearts.  Chris Onstad released a short clip of a possible Achewood animated pilot, this 3d car was printed, and Aaron Diaz got his Dresden Codak kickstarter funded within an hour of posting.

I've spent the week wringing my hands over getting things prepared to move.  I've had really short work days too, but I get home and feel instantly tired.  Reading Magnolia Porter's tweets about not having her ADD meds for ECCC makes me wonder if I would benefit from a scrip myself.

ECCC was this weekend and I also moved.  Everything leading up is a pretty wide blur.  I remember I watched a stream with Emmy, Anthony, Matt, Madeliene, and Terrence on Thursday.  On Tuesday I introduced myself to Skin Deep, just based on reading some tweets between Magnolia Pearl & Kory Bingman.  It never ceases to amaze me when someone with okay comic creating skills shows tenacity & really develops a signature & flow to their work.  I wonder if I've become slightly less interested in the stories developing and more interested in artists & their work developing.

I spent a little time Wednesday evening, after waking from a nap, looking up proposed character names for Kadunka K, and found out they were really appropriate names.  Stranger than that, they were actual Japanese names that I had somehow absorbed & appropriated when I was 15. That night I also listened to Joe Hisaishi at The Budokan and was charmed & enthralled.

On Saturday I started reading Girl By the Sea thanks to Mia Schwartz.  Also we're now in March and very nearly in Spring.  I've spent the bulk of February keeping up with current events, putting off moving, and allowing myself to write, brainstorm, and doodle when inspiration struck.  I read leisurely, absorbed a lot, and spent less time watching videos.  I took in the warmth & golden beauty of the waning afternoon.  I slept often and long.  And then I closed a chapter in my life and began a new one.  Welcome to March 2013.

ginger & lime

I've been drinking ginger & lime green tea and eating spicey/ginger porridge all weekend to stave off catching a bad cold.  It seems to be working.  It was my nephew's 6th birthday on Friday and I spent the night at my friend Ian's house and had tacos and beer.  I came home Saturday to shower and do my laundry, but I fell asleep and got up in the evening.  I've been pretty subsumed in brainstorming and writing my Marvel-Watchmen idea.  I have about 8 tabs open researching various characters as well as developments in Timely/Marvel comics.  It's a little daunting, so I'm taking occassional breaks.

This weekend Heems announced that Das Racist broke up.  I started following a bunch of really cool visual develpment artists as suggested by twitter.  Sometime this week I fell asleep to Bob's Burgers season 1.  I can't wait to sleep watch the other seasons!  Ian introduced me to Sword Art Online and his friend Vince told me about his Modern Day Mist-born fan-fic.

This was the week of the murder of Jordan Russell Davis, the controversy over Marissa Mayer's maternity leave comments, and Lindsay Lohan's arrest for assault.

I started the week off by snagging Manga Studio EX4 for cyber-monday or basically the exteneded black friday sale.  I have yet to set it up, but I'm excited.  I started following Stephen McCranie and his Mal & Chad stories.  I discovered and started reading part of Ever Blue by Michael Sexton.  I downloaded the Sleepwalker series after reminiscing about Brett Blevins art on New Mutants.

It's Halloween season again, and Emily Carrol's got another terrifying tale to tell.

I like JP Coovert's comics. Also Puppy Teeth looks interesting. I'm mostly interest in the work of Kevin Czapiewski and his brother Matt who does Eat That Toast. I also discovered Stuff No One Told Me.

Remember this sketch from last week? I decided in keeping with my New Year's Resolution, and having read an awesome google + thread begun by Dustin Harbin relating to publishing, perseverance, and self consciousness, to push myself through in completing this sketch. The first pic is a feeble attempt at inking digitally in GIMP. The second one is a scanned and cleaned up version of a pen & pocket brush ink.




Can you tell which one I felt more inspired by? If you guessed the second picture, you get to see this preview. While I was inking I began to think about what these characters appearances could say about their personalities and histories. I've been reading a lot of Dresden Codak's tumblr, including this latest Speculative DC Reboot on villians. The female character on the left really came to life for me. She's definitely a very masculine character who is unsure of how to act feminine, but outside of her duty, wants to experience courtship and romance. I'm a little wary of pandering to LGBT readers, but I think her character is truly compelling for me. The other two, are pretty prototypical master/student, stoic/goofball archtypes. I'm certain these characters should be on a quest of some kind, and I'm heavily leaning towards a tongue-in-cheek, possibly self-referential slant.

This weekend I watched Contagion, a bunch of The Wire, NCIS, and Battle Star Galactica. I was so caught up in work I forgot to watch Breaking Bad. That might, for once, be a good thing. This past week the world lost Steve Jobs. Bless you Steve Jobs for all that you were, and all you accomplished.

This weekend all I did was make salsa and watch NCIS. I also tried to draw some Zivas, but as you can tell I can't draw. I'm finding her likeness hard to pin down, but I really like the lines in the face front image.


TCJ eloquently stated the sensation that is Emily Carroll. Later last week I rediscovered Kyla Vanderklugt. Nick Edwards proved how algebraic he is.



Haha I was just reading this subsub comic, Dead Horn when Joey Bataan's Latin Strut came on.

This weekend I've been taking in the pre-winter fuzzies, that childish wooziness that accompanies being dizzied by all the hoopla of normal folk during the holiday season. Also I am a little sick still so my body is doing weird things like pumping my body full of endorphins and serotonin and allowing my voice to drop two octaves. I am taking in a lot of entertainment such as the entire Ranma 1/2 series, Callers (see below), a Dustin Harbin interview on Ink Studs, BSG, Superman Returns, Lost Season 1, Batman: The Killing Joke. I could, however, use some orange juice.
